2 Million Syrians Displaced, 815 killed in Idlib, Regime Forces Shell Turkish Troops, US-Backed SDF Storms Dair Ez-Zoar Towns

Regime forces shell Turkish troops and proxy factions’ positions in rural Tal Abyad while Turkish troops target areas in rural Ain Issa

The Syrian Observatory has monitored intensive rocket attack carried out by regime forces on Turkish forces and proxies-controlled positions in Tal Abyad countryside, north of Raqqa. No casualties have been reported to date.

Meanwhile, Turkish forces have shelled Dibs village on Al Hasakah- Aleppo highway, nearly four km west of Ain Issa town.

Yesterday, SOHR sources reported that Turkish forces and proxy factions carried out intensive shelling targeting the villages of Qaza’ali, Salib and Korbeallik, west of Tel Abyad, leaving a regime soldier seriously injured.

On March 7, the Syrian Observatory also monitored artillery shelling carried out by Turkish forces and proxy factions, targeting regime forces positions near the M4 road in the 93rd Brigade and the village of Al-Khalidiya, west of Ain Issa city of Raqqa countryside. No casualties have been reported to date.

On March 2, SOHR sources reported that Turkish forces fired artillery shells on the perimeter of Ain Issa camp and the international highway (M4) in Raqqa countryside. No casualties have been reported.

Ceasefire violations: regime forces fire several shells on Aleppo and Idlib countryside

SOHR activists say that regime forces fired several shells on Ishtabraq area in Jisr Al-Shughur countryside and Al-Sarmaniah area in Sahl Al-Ghab. Otherwise, tense calm has been prevailing throughout the “de-escalation” zone.

Hours ago, SOHR sources monitored tense calm prevailing throughout the area of “Putin-Erdogan” as the new ceasefire entered its fifth day in a row.

Meanwhile, opposition factions and regime forces have exchanged fire this morning on Kafr Ta’aal frontline in western Aleppo countryside, with suspension of aerial operations since Thursday evening. Meanwhile, Russian drones occasionally fly over the area.

Yesterday, Observatory sources reported that jihadist factions targeted a regime military vehicle on Al-Ankawi frontline in north-western countryside of Hama.

Sniping and exchanging fire took place on frontlines between jihadist factions and regime forces on the other.

Activist also told SOHR that regime forces, stationed in west Aleppo countryside, targeted Turkish military vehicle near the 46th regiment in Al-Atareb area with heavy machine guns, in a bid to provoke Turkish forces. No casualties have been reported about.

IED explosion kills the head of “Jaysh Al-Islam Sharia Authority” in rural Aleppo

Aleppo Province – Syrian Observatory for Human Rights: SOHR activists have confirmed that a commander in “Jaysh Al-Islam” died affected by the injury he had in IED explosion which targeted his vehicle hours ago in Al-Bab area, north-west of Aleppo.

It is noteworthy that the victim is the head of “Jaysh Al-Islam Sharia Authority”.

Earlier this morning, Observatory sources reported hearing new explosion in areas under control of the Turkish forces and their proxies in Aleppo countryside this morning. The explosion was caused by detonating an IED in a vehicle in Afrin city, north-west of Aleppo, which injured one person at least.

On March 8, a bomb-motorcycle exploded near the headquarter of Turkish-backed faction “Sultan Murad” in Afrin city center, north of Aleppo, The explosion injured one person at least.

Backed by International Coalition air support, SDF storms towns and villages east of Dair Ez-Zoar, arresting several people

Reliable source have informed SOHR that the Syrian Democratic Forces raided the School of Al-Shahabat in al-Hawayij village in western rural Dair Ez-Zoar amid extensive overflights of International Coalition aircraft over the area.

Several displaced people from Al-Mayadeen city living in the school were arrested. No information is available about the reasons for the arrest.

Similarly, SDF raided the house of a person in the city of Al-Busayrah, east of Dair Ez-Zoar, arresting two of his sons while the third son managed to escape.

Observatory sources added that the fugitive was the wanted person that SDF was looking for on charges of collecting illegal taxes “zakat” for ISIS.

On 25th of last month, SOHR sources reported that the Syrian Democratic Forces arrested more than 30 civilians from the village of Al-Raz in rural Dair Ez-Zoar, five of whom were young men and an elderly man from the village of Al-Raz, while the rest were displaced to the village from nearby areas. A woman was seriously injured as a result of indiscriminate SDF shooting during the raids.

On the same day, the Syrian Observatory monitored the killing of four members of the Islamic State cells after raiding a house where members of the group were hiding in the town of Al-Jarzi in eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, where clashes took place between members of SDF and the group’s cells.

The heavy price of capturing M5 Highway by Russian-led regime forces: 2.2 millions displaced and 815 killed

The most violent and brutal military escalation ever in the “de-escalation” zone, stretching from the north-eastern mountains of Lattakia to the north-western suburbs of Aleppo city passing through both Hama and Idlib, has completed its tenth consecutive month.

Over the past ten months, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights tracked all major developments on the ground, systematic killing and mass displacement of people. The fiercest escalation ever started on the 30th of April 2019, following unprecedented flare-up in Russian and regime aerial and ground bombardment which ultimately paved the way for several ground offensives. These successive violent assaults enabled the Syrian regime to recover 346 cities, towns and villages, to achieve  the Russian and regime major objective by controlling the strategic Damascus – Aleppo international highway (M5).

Syrian civilians are the only victims of these operations which have been killing, maiming and displacing powerless people and destroying  properties on a mass scale. At the same time, the international community seems satisfied with mere condemnations and press releases,  and relieved by the recently signed but fragile Russia – Turkish ceasefire agreement.

Since late April 2019, Syrian Observatory activists have also documented the displacement of nearly 2,200,000 civilians fleeing the Russian and regime brutality. A large number of those IDPs are staying in the open in nearby agricultural land,  while others have chosen to go  to their relatives in the depth of Idlib city and the northern and north-western parts of Aleppo. Many others resorted to refugee camps on the border with Iskenderun region.

It is worth mentioning that this area has seen second-time or multiple-times displacements, as the regime and Russian intensive military operations forced many families in areas in Hama, Idlib and Aleppo to flee once again to other places. The warlords’ practices and profiteering contributed to the  worsening of this humanitarian crisis and suffering; one example, among many, is the hike of house prices and rent to a level unaffordable by the many. Meanwhile, the Turkish Jandarma continue killing the Syrians who search for a save haven on the border with Turkey, the “de-escalation” guarantor.

Since the start of the military escalation  on the 30th of April 2019, SOHR has documented the killing of 8,149 people in the “de-escalation” zone. The death toll is as follows:

1,770 civilians, including 465 children and 311 women all killed by Russian airstrikes,  regime and factions’ rocket shelling:

577 civilians, including 143 children, 103 females, nine of the civil defense and six of the ambulance crew, were killed in Russian aerial bombardment on Idlib and Hama

120 civilians, including 23 women and 24 children, were killed by regime helicopters’ bombardment using barrel-bombs.

710 civilians, including 202 children, 119 women and six members of rescue teams, were killed in airstrikes by regime jets.

245 civilians, including 45 women and 60 children, were killed in shelling by regime ground forces.

118 civilians, including 36 children and 21 women, were killed in opposition factions’ shelling on al-Suqaylabiyah, Qamhana, Al-Rasif, Al-Aziziyah, Karnaz, Jurin, Al-Nairab Camp, neighborhoods in Aleppo city and southern countryside.

2,265 jihadis among 3,332 opposition fighters were killed in bombardment and fierce clashes with regime forces and allies.

3,047 regime soldiers and loyalists were killed in the same period, of whom 170 soldiers were killed in Turkish drone attacks.

Recently, the area has seen undeniable shifts of power and influence on the ground. Reliable SOHR sources  have confirmed that regime forces have captured more than 276 cities, towns and villages in Idlib, Hama and Aleppo provinces since the recent ground operation was launched on January 24.

During the same period, from the 30th of April to date, Observatory activists documented the use of internationally prohibited substances by regime forces in ground bombardment, which burned thousands of acres of agricultural lands in the southern and western parts of Khan Sheikhoun, Al-Hobait, Abidin, The outskirts of Kafr Sajnah, Kafr Ain, and other areas within the southern sector of the countryside of Idlib, Harsh al-Skebiyeh, Tal Hadya and IKARDA area in the southern countryside of Aleppo, and Kafr Zitah and Latamanh in the northern countryside of Hama.

In addition, activists documented looting, thefts and ransacking of civilians’ houses, shops and crops by the regime forces and loyalists in areas recently captured.
