Al-Shabaab attacks KDF troops in on Somali-Kenyan border

The militant group Al-Shabaab has claimed that its fighters attacked a police camp in Garissa County, eastern Kenya.

Pro-Al-Shabaab website Somalimemo reported that the militants “destroyed” a police station and burnt down military vehicles.

There are no independent reports to verify the claims.

The claim comes after US Africa Command (Africom) announced in a statement that they’ve killed a top Al-Shabaab commander responsible for the Manda Bay attack in Lamu, Kenya, in an airstrike in Sakow, southwestern Somalia.

Hormuud reports the killing of a staff member at Jilib branch by the US attack

US Africa Command said it carried out an airstrike in armed group al-Shabaab stronghold in Jilib on Sunday (February 23, 2020).

The news comes as Somalia’s leading Telecommunication company Hormuud reported the killing of a staff at Jilib station by the US attack but Africom spokesman said no civilians were harmed in their initial assessment but the command will review the information provided.

Africom confirmed one militant was killed in the operation that was conducted in coordination with the Federal government of Somalia security sector.

“In coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, U.S. Africa Command conducted an airstrike targeting an al-Shabaab member in the vicinity of Jilib, Somalia, Feb. 24.” Africom press release said.

” Initial assessment concluded the airstrike killed one (1) militant.”

Pentagon further said the airstrike believed to be conducted by drone technology is part of an international effort and U.S. partners to help provide support to Somali-led efforts to counter and contain dangerous organizations from exporting violence more broadly.

US military says militants wounded in fresh airstrike in Somalia

The U.S. Africa Command bombed an al-Shabaab compound near Dujuuma, Somalia, on Sunday, the seventh in a series of strikes on the group this month in operations coordinated with the Somalia government.

Three militants were wounded, per a U.S. assessment, a day after two others were killed and one wounded at a compound near Saakow, Somalia, and four days after a strike killed three people near Wadajir, Somalia. No civilians were injured or killed, per a U.S. assessment.

US conducts an airstrike in southern Somalia

In coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, U.S. Africa Command conducted an airstrike targeting an al-Shabaab compound in the vicinity of Saakow, Somalia, Feb. 22.

The US raid killed two militants, another was wounded, and an al-Shabaab compound was reduced as a result of this precision airstrike.

“We currently assess no civilians were injured or killed as a result of this airstrike,” said AFRICOM in a statement released on Sunday.

Somalia remains key to the security environment of East Africa, and its long-term stability is important to advancing U.S. interests in the region.

SNA forces carry out an operation against Al-Shabaab

Two al-Shabaab ring leaders have been killed in the Middle Shabelle region following security operations by the Somali army.

The state media reported two Al-Shabaab senior commanders and several others wounded during the military operation on the outskirts of Balad town. The forces also destroyed Shabaab based in the area.

This military operation is part of the huge efforts made by the national army to eliminate the group and secure the roads between the cities of Balad and Jowhar.

Shabaab control number villages in the region as it lost major towns including Qoryoolay, Afgooye, Marka, Janaale and other to SNA forces.

US military says militants killed in fresh airstrike in Somalia

At least three al-Shabaab fighters have been killed following US airstrike in southern Somalia.

In a statement, U.S. Africa Command said in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, the military conducted a precision airstrike targeting al-Shabaab in the vicinity of Wadajir of Middle Jubba region.

The statement said the command’s initial assessment concluded this precision airstrike killed three terrorists.

The command said Somalia remains key to the security environment of East Africa, and its long-term stability is important to advancing U.S. interests in the region.

“We will continue to work together on our support of the Federal Government of Somalia in its effort to bring improved governance, development and stability to the Somali people,” the mission said.
