Airstrikes kill more than 32 civilians in Yemen, U.N. official says

Yemen's Houthi rebels accused the Saudis of launching retaliatory airstrikes after they shot down a coalition warplane on Friday.

Strikes killed more than 30 civilians in a mountainous northern Yemeni province Saturday (February 15, 2020), the U.N. humanitarian chief for the country said, calling the attack “shocking.”

The Yemeni rebels, known as Houthis, accused the Saudi-led coalition of launching retaliatory airstrikes, after they shot down a warplane for coalition over the province of Jawf.

Saudi Arabia’s state-run news agency quoted Col. Turki al-Maliki, a spokesman for the coalition, as saying it was investigating “possible collateral damage” from a rescue operation in the area after the downing of the Tornado warplane late Friday.

Al-Maliki was quoted as saying the plane was providing air support for Yemeni government forces fighting the Houthis.

He said the two-pilot crew of the Tornado managed to eject safely before the crash, claiming that the Houthis opened fire on them. He said the Houthis were responsible for the pilots’ “life and safety," according to the Saudi Arabia official news agency.

He did not say whether there were causalities or provide further details.

The U.N. humanitarian coordinator for Yemen, Lise Grnade, said “these terrible strikes” in al-Maslub district killed at least 31 civilians and wounded 12 others, according to preliminary field reports.

“So many people are being killed in Yemen — it’s a tragedy and it’s unjustified. … Five years into this conflict and belligerents are still failing to uphold this responsibility," she said. “It’s shocking.”

She said many wounded were taken to hospitals in Jawf and Yemen's capital, Sanaa.

Youssef al-Hadri, spokesman of the Houthi-run health ministry, said the airstrikes killed at least 32 people, including women and children.

The Iranian-backed rebels released graphic images showing destroyed building and vehicles as well as bodies described the attack's victims.

They also released footage allegedly showing the downing of the Saudi aircraft and its wreckage.

Houthis name six commanders killed while fighting Yemen army in recent battles

The Houthis admitted that six of their leaders were killed while fighting the Yemeni army on several battlefronts in recent days, according to Houthi-run Saba news agency. 

Col. Abdullatif Saleh Al-Ghafri, Col. Moin Abdullah Mar’ee, Col. Abdulbadee’a Abdulrabe Al-Huthi and Col. Ali Yahya Al-Wajih were buried in Sana’a on Wednesday, while the funerals of Brig. Gen. Yahya Abduljabbar Hassan Jahadan and Brig. Gen. Abdullah Mohammed Hunaish were held in the capital the previous day.

More than five years of war in Yemen has left 80 percent of its population reliant on humanitarian assistance, creating one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. 

As of Oct. 31, the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED), working with Yemen Data Project, had recorded more than 100,000 fatalities in Yemen since 2015, which includes more than 12,000 civilians.

Once Again, Civilians Victims of Military Failure of Saudi-led Coalition

Once again, civilian casualties fall due to the raids of the aggression coalition fighter jets on Yemen, which committed a new massacre of dozens, most of them women and children, in Al-Maslob district in Al-Jawf governorate, north of the country.
 
This hideous massacre, in which statistics indicate the martyrdom of 32 civilians and the injury of others, is an extension of the crimes of this coalition of aggression  since the start of its absurd war on Yemen in March of 2015 under the collusion and silence of the international community and the United Nations organization.
 
The strange thing is that with all rudeness, the Saudi coalition admitted in a statement what it committed and considered it an accidental error, while this crime was met with widespread condemnations from the Yemeni forces and circles, considering it like its predecessors crimes that will not be fall under a statute of limitations. It reveals the ugly and criminal face and the extent of failure and confusion for this enemy that has no goal but to kill and target the Yemeni people with internationally prohibited bombs, destroying the land and people of Yemen.
 
Five years was and is still able to reveal the goals of this aggression, including occupying the land, plundering wealth, denigration of identity and religion, reviving regional and sectarian strife and plunging the country into strife and endless problems.
 
Targeting civilians in Al-Jawf coincided with the intensity of air strikes in the Yemeni regions during the last days, specifically the areas of Nihm, Al-Jawf, Marib, Hajjah and Sa'adah, in light of a crazy escalation of air strikes and military operations on the ground, particularly in the border front and Hodeidah governorate, which continue to bombard neighborhoods, villages and areas with artillery and Katyusha rockets. The victims are also civilians, homes, civilian facilities and infrastructure without achieving any noticeable military targets.
 
Military experts explained this escalation and the hysterical act of the coalition of aggression as an attempt to cover up its recent defeats, through using its air force towards civilians after the military failure on the ground and the painful strikes on the battlefields. The latest of that is AlBunyan Al-Marsous operation, in which the Yemeni Army and Popular Committees managed to control the strategic Nihm area and districts in Al-Jawf and Ma'rib governorates, which are among the most important strongholds of the authority of Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi and his forces.
 
The great losses suffered by the Saudi-led coalition inside the Yemen also prompted it to try to disrupt the internal front through plans designed to bring the provinces under the control of the Army and Popular Committees into a state of chaos and internal conflict, as revealed by the Ministry of Interior in Sana'a as part of a major security operation called "thwart their deeds". It was revealed in it breaking up two spy rings operating for Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to carry out acts of chaos and sabotage activities to harm the status of the Republic of Yemen and its institutions.
 
Thwarting this plot represents a new security victory for the authority in Sana'a, added to its military victories. Such a victory is met by a new madness of aggression, resulting in the loss of innocent lives and new civilian victims.

Correction Organization Calls on UN to Form Investigation Committee on Aggression Massacre in Al-Jawf

The Correction Organization called on the international community, the United Nations and the Security Council to form an international investigation committee to look into the crime of targeting innocent people and destroying homes in Al-Masloub District in Al-Jawf Province by US-Saudi Aggression.
 
The Correction Organization condemned the crime of targeting innocent citizens in  Al-Masloub District in Al-Jawf Governorate, killing and wounding dozens of innocent people, most of them women and children and destroying a number of homes.
 
The Supreme Committee for the Correction Organization called for holding the aggression countries accountable for their continued hysterical crimes against the Yemeni people and putting an end to their arrogance of targeting civilians from the beginning of the aggression, in light of the shameful silence of the UN and the Security Council.
