Somali special forces and their allied AU soldiers have successfully retaken Xarshanley near the ancient port city of Barawe on Sunday from Al-Shabaab.

According to the reports, the troops are conducting operations to clear bobby traps and other explosive devices that may have been left behind.

The village which was previously controlled by al-Shabaab is 10 Kilometers north of the Southwest State administrative capital, Barawe.

Somali troops have stepped up operations to retake areas still under the control of the armed group in the country mainly in the south-central part areas.

The forces recently took Canoole and Sabiid towns which were controlled by the group.

Lower Shabelle region is very strategic, and its control gives an upper hand to either of the sides.

Nearly ten people killed in inter-clan clashes in Somalia

At least ten people were reported to have been killed and scores wounded in a renewed inter-clan fighting erupted in central Somalia.

The battle ensued in Wardheer, a small rural town located some 60 kilometers away from Mataban district in Hiran region and both warring clan militiamen exchanged heavy and small weapons.

The situation is tense and local residents are in panic for the ongoing combat which could force hundreds to flee their houses if the local authorities fail to intervene in the skirmish swiftly.

The fight is over a dispute and clan vendetta.

The Horn of Africa country is suffering from a severe drought that continues to push the aid-dependent nation closer to a full-blown famine.

Kenya says its police killed three militants in Garissa shoot out

Three Al Shabaab militants were on Friday night killed by police during a raid at a Border Patrol Unit (BDU) in Garissa County.

Police Spokesman Charles Owino said the attack occurred at Yumbis in Fafi Constituency last night when Al Shabaab militants crossed over from Somalia.

They are reported to have destroyed a communications mast that serves the region, before they launched the attack at the police unit, leading to a fierce shoot out.

“Three Al Shabaab attackers were killed during the incident,” Owino said, “but our officers did not suffer a casualty.”

Owino says apart from three of the attackers who were killed, several others are thought to have escaped with serious injuries but there was no casualty on the officers.

The incident comes a week after 12 police officers were killed in Wajir when their vehicle ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at Konton area near the Somalia border.

Arab Parliament warns Kenya against invading Somalia’s territory

The Arab Parliament on Thursday cautioned the Kenyan government against interfering with the territorial borders of neighbouring Somalia.

The Arab body rejected Kenya’s threats to meddle in Somalia’s internal affairs, arguing that the move violates neighbourly principles.

The decision by the Arab Parliament is now thought to pose a new hurdle to Kenya’s efforts to lobby for support in resolving the dispute. By the time of going to press, the Kenyan authorities had not issued a statement regarding the new development.

The Kenya-Somalia tussle began in August 2014 after the latter filed a suit at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over alleged unlawful operations within her maritime territory.

Over the past few weeks, the tussle has taken a fresh twist after Kenya closed her border points in Lamu as tension escalates. This comes after Kenya deported several Somalia high profile officials who had just landed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for failing to meet immigration requirements.
