 Iraqi warplanes kill four Alleged Members of the Islamic State in Anbar

Four alleged members of the Islamic State group were killed Sunday in an air raid on a terrorist hotbed in Anbar province, a tribal militia commander said.

“Iraqi warplanes have targeted a secret tunnel of the Islamic State militant group in al-Madham district, 90 km south of Ain Assad airbase in western Anbar,” Qatari al Obeidi told Alsumaria News TV channel.

“The airstrike left four (alleged members of the) Islamic State killed,” Obeidi said, adding that the bombardment destroyed a large cache of IS ammunition and weapons inside the tunnel.

Earlier in the day, the Iraqi army launched a military operation to purge the desert areas in Ar Rutbah, west of Anbar, from Islamic State cells.

Iraq declared the collapse of Islamic State’s territorial influence in Iraq in November 2017 with the recapture of Rawa, a city on Anbar’s western borders with Syria, which was the group’s last bastion in Iraq.

IS declared a self-styled “caliphate” in a third of Iraq and neighboring Syria in 2014. A government campaign, backed by a U.S.-led international coalition and paramilitary forces, was launched in 2016 to retake IS-held regions, managing to retake all havens, most notably the city of Mosul, the group’s previously proclaimed capital.

Car bomb blast kills Iraqi citizen, wounds 3 others in Karbala

An Iraqi citizen was killed and three others were wounded on Saturday night in a car bomb blast in the holy city of Karbala, a security source said.

“An explosive charge hidden inside a car went off near a security checkpoint on a road between Babylon and Krabala cities,” the Arabic language Alghad Press quoted the Euphrates operations command as saying in a press statement.

“The explosion left one person killed and three others wounded,” added the source.

He noted that a security force rushed to the blast site and prevented passers-by from approaching.

Violence in the country has surged further with the emergence of Islamic State extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.

The surge in violence between armed groups and government forces has resulted in over five million internally displaced persons across Iraq and left more than 11 million in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Baghdad Operations apprehend 12 suspects in Iraqi capital

Baghdad Operations command announced, on Saturday, apprehending 12 suspects on different charges, in different areas of the capital, Baghdad.

The Command said in a statement that security forces from Baghdad operations Command apprehended 10 persons on different charges, including: robbery, threats, fraud, forged documents, distribution of inflammatory leaflets in different areas of Baghdad.

The suspects were transferred to the competent authorities to receive their punishment, the statement added.

Furthermore, the Command added that another security forces managed to apprehend two suspects for possessing narcotic substances, while pointed out that one of the suspects was arrested in Talibiyah area and the other in Hay Uwr area.

It is noteworthy that security forces are launching several operations to maintain and boost stability in the capital, Baghdad.

Iraqi civilian killed in armed attack southeast of Baghdad

A security source informed, on Saturday, that a civilian was killed in an armed attack, southeast of Baghdad.

In a press statement, the source said that unknown gunmen shot a civilian in the vicinity of Madain District, killing him immediately.

It is noteworthy that Baghdad is witnessing a relative stability; however, it suffers some armed attacks, while security forces find anonymous bodies and dismantle IEDs in different areas of the capital.

Last week, Joint Operations Command announced launched the second phase of operation “Will of Victory”, in order to boost stability in the areas north of Baghdad, in addition to the vicinity of the provinces of Diyala, Salahuddin and Anbar.

Iraqi court sentences two men to death for joining Islamic State

An Iraqi court has sentenced two men to death after finding them guilty of joining the Islamic State group, a judicial council said.

One of them was found implicated in terrorist attacks against security forces near the Baiji oil refinery and the University of Tikrit in the Sunni-majority province of Salahuddin, Baghdad Today website quoted the Supreme Judicial Council as saying in a press statement on Thursday.

The other convict confessed to running a workshop for booby-trapping Islamic State vehicles in 2014, the statement read.

The court rulings were issued pursuant to article no. ¼ of the anti-terrorism law, it added.

Iraq’s anti-terrorism law empowers courts to convict people who are believed to have helped jihadists even if they are not accused of carrying out attacks.

The exact number of detained Islamic State militants is still unknown, however, it’s estimated to be at thousands. It’s also unclear how many members are likely to face death sentences.

The UN, the European Union and international human rights groups always criticize mass killings in Iraq and call for abolishing the death penalty, which was suspended on June 10, 2003, but was reinstated on August 8, 2004.
