This is the suffering of Yemeni children in wartime: Dropping out of schools and child labor

September 27, 2018, almasdar-tanslation ٢٧ ÓÈÊãÈÑ ٢٠١٨

A year ago, the Yemeni pupil, Mounir, was preparing his school bag in preparation for the school, but today he is heading to a buffet to work in preparing breakfast for daily fare workers on Cairo Street in central Sana'a.

Mounir (11 years old) is making a big effort as he stands on a wooden box that can stir bread on the high sheet. His work ends at 10 a.m. and before he leaves, the director is keen to confirm him by attending early in the evening.

On his way home, he goes to the Saba school where he encounters his colleagues leaving school, especially Tariq, who is addressing him saying, "I hope to be like you, earn money and buy a Galaxy S3 phone" and answer it confidently «Tell your parents that you want to work, tell them I will save every day 500 riyals (0.75 dollars) ».

Mounir's words were found in Tariq, whose family suffers from a lack of living, and the costs of schooling have placed a heavy burden on his father, who works as a carpenter at a war-affected shop.

Tariq joined the ranks of al-Houthi, the body of his older brothers with their long hair and their new weapon made him excited to appear like them.

Mounir told al-Jazeera that he was proud to have become self-supporting, in addition to contributing part of his daily salary to the cost of living his family.

He says that his father, who works in the traffic department, lives in a difficult financial situation, with the salaries of employees in the government sector dropping two years ago.

The case of Anwar Hamid, who left his village of Dhamar (central Yemen) intending to work in the drafting of gold, was different, saying "My family is hard, we almost died of hunger", adding that he decided to help his family to get the money.

Hamid (15 years) works with gold, starts the whirlpool hours at 9:00 am and ends at noon, takes a short lunch break, and then returns to work at 3:00 p.m. and until one morning.

The child, who comes from a village in Dhamar province (central Yemen), hopes to continue his long-lived work so that his family will not starve again, as he says, "we have had difficult circumstances, my mother was wriggling with kidney pain, and we could not buy her medicine."

Unknown future

Mazen, 14 years old, hangs out with his friends in the streets and is the same right to go back to school, but the situation has frustrated him with his peers.

The boy wakes up late, spends his time playing video games, listening to foreign songs and watching movies, as he says he wants to learn English from movies and songs.

"We were hoping for a return to school, but the teachers are off the job, the study is almost stalled and we are now without a future, it is all our fault that we were born in Yemen, infested with war, disease, and death," he said.

As school returns begin, students are expected to return to school but some 2 million children in different governorates are out of school, according to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), which is one of the biggest victims of the war in Yemen.

The teacher Abdurahman aL Maqtary said that The issue of war and economic conditions has overshadowed children, and the study has become an expelling environment for them, while "war and armed groups and their materialists have been a black hole that eats up children,".

"Some families have pushed their children to the labor market, and the frustration of the study controls the psychological status of parents, children, and teachers, the future is unknown, thinking is confined to a living, otherwise it is a luxury for many families," he added.

Yemeni Forces Strike the Coalition Paid Fighters on Western Coast

Sep 27, 2018, YemenExtra, Y.A

The Yemeni armed forces targeted on Thursday 17 military vehicles belonging to US-backed Saudi-led coalition’s paid fighters with artillery shells on the Western Coast Front, a military source told YemenExtra.

The army’s artillery attacked a gathering of the the paid fighters in al-Jah area, including the 17 military vehicles.

They also destroyed two military vehicles with explosive devices in north of Khukha area, killing their crews.

Save the Children voiced alarm over a “dramatic” rise in civilian casualties in Yemen’s Hudaydahsince June, when the coalition  launched an offensive to seize the lifeline port city.

“Between January and May this year, there were an average of 44 civilian casualties every month in al-Hudaydah. The subsequent three months (June-August) saw the figure jump to a monthly average of 116 – an increase of 164 percent,” the London-based NGO reported on Monday.

The US-Saudi-led coalition  launched an offensive on Hudaydah on 12 June in the largest battle of the war that the United Nations fears risks triggering a famine in Yemen where an estimated 8.4 million people are on the verge of starvation. Recently, It has been paused for peace talks, but no deal has been struck leaving Yemenis pessimistic over a viable political process.

Abdulmalik al-Houthi, the leader of the Houthi(Ansarallah)  movement, which is the main force that faces the coallition, said on a TV speech ,” The decision of invading the Yemeni ,western coast, has been taken and adopted by the United States of America, noting that the Saudis are trying to abolish Yemen’s freedom,” stressing that it was the people of Yemen’s right to defend their country.

The Bab el-Mandab Strait, which is the southern entrance to the Red Sea, is one of the world’s key shipping lanes for crude oil and allows crude exports into the European market.

The United Nations said more than 350,000 people have been displaced from the strategic Red Sea port town of Hudaydah in western Yemen since June.Deputy spokesman for the Secretary-General, Farhan Haq, said during a press conference on Monday that violent clashes have erupted in the city over the past few days, especially in the Ad Durayhimi district. He added that emergency humanitarian assistance has already been provided to more than 90 per cent of those displaced.

After thousands of civilians victims, Yemenis respond with missiles

Sep 27, 2018, YemenExtra, Y.A

Yemeni armed forces have reportedly launched domestically-designed and -developed ballistic missiles at military targets in Saudi Arabia’s southwestern border regions of Jizan and Asir in response to for strikes by the US-backed Saudi-led coalition.

According to a military official, two short-range Zelzal-1 (Earthquake-1) missiles hit a gathering of the coalition’s paid fighters in the east of the mountainous area of al-Doud early on Thursday.

Yemeni army forces had, it added, hit another gathering of the coalition’s paid fighters in the Majaza border area of Asir with the same type of ballistic missile on Wednesday night.

The official read that another Zelzal-1 missile had also struck a group of the coalition  military hardware and equipment in the Midi Desert in Yemen’s northwestern Hajjah Province earlier on Wednesday, inflicting damage.

Furthermore, it fired a barrage of Katyusha missiles towards gatherings of the coalition’s paid fighters in the province of Dhalea, leaving dozens of them dead and wounded.

Separately, over a dozen Yemeni fishermen lost their lives as the coalition fighter jets targeted their fishing boats off the coast of the western province of Hodeidah.

Additionally, Sheikhs and tribesmen of the capital of Sana’a held ,today, two rallies to condemn the ongoing war by the coalition on the Yemeni people.

In March 2015, the US -backed –Saudi-led coalition started  a war against Yemen with the declared aim of crushing the Houthi Ansarullah movement, who had taken over from the staunch Riyadh ally and fugitive former president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, while also seeking to secure the Saudi border with its southern neighbor. Three years and over 600,000 dead and injured Yemeni people and  prevented the patients from travelling abroad for treatment and blocked the entry of medicine into the war-torn country, the war has yielded little to that effect.

Despite the coalition claims that it is bombing the positions of the Ansarullah fighters, Saudi bombers are flattening residential areas and civilian infrastructures.

Human Rights Watch, last week, criticized the Riyadh regime’s “campaign to discredit and undermine a UN investigation into abuses by all Yemen’s warring parties,” calling it “yet another blatant attempt to avoid scrutiny of the coalition’s own actions in Yemen.”

On Friday, Human Rights Watch (HRW) condemned attempts by the regime in Riyadh and its ally the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to stop an investigation into crimes committed in Yemen.

Fresh death toll after Saudi airstrikes hit Saada and Hodeidah

Sep 26, 2018, YemenExtra, M.A.

Three citizens, including a child, were killed on Tuesday by air raids conducted by the Saudi-led coalition on residential areas in Saada and Hodeidah provinces.

A child was killed as an air raid by the Saudi coalition hit the area of Ghafra in the district of al-Thaher.

In the province of Hodeidah, two civilians were killed in an air strike on a car carrying citizens on the road between Zabid and al-Jarahi.

Furthermore, intensive hovering of Saudi jets prevented paramedics from reaching the scene of the crime on the road between the districts of Zabid and al-Jerahi.

In a preset time, two civilians were killed and a third wounded on Sunday night as an air raid struck a poultry farm in al-Tarbiyah in the district of Zabid. In addition, six children from one family sustained wounds by shrapnel from a shell fired by Saudi/UAE-paid militias in a village located within Tuhita district in Hodeidah coastal province.

This comes in the context of the daily crimes committed by the paid-militias affiliated with the US-backed coalition against the Yemeni people on various provinces, which are only being met with the silence of the world, thereafter encouraging the coalition to commit even more humanitarian violations.
