Four Iraqi police personnel killed in two Islamic State attacks in Mosul

Four Iraqi police personnel were killed in two attacks carried out by Islamic State members in different regions in Mosul, a security source from Nineveh police said on Sunday.

In remarks to BasNews, Col. Ghazwan Sheet said “Islamic State carried out two attacks. The first was at the entrance of al-Shoura region, while the other was at the entrance of Makhmur, southwest of Mosul. The two attacks left four police personnel killed and a fifth seriously injured.”

The militants, according to Sheet, “ran away toward unknown destination, while security troops carried out a campaign in the south and southwest of Mosul.”

Investigations were conducted after the victims bodies were taken to forensic medicine department. Islamic State continues to launch sporadic attacks across Iraq against troops. Security reports indicate that the militant group still poses threat against stability in the country. The group still has dormant cells, through which it carries out attacks, across Iraq like it used to do before 2014.

A total of 75 Iraqi civilians were killed, while 179 others were injured due to acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in Iraq in September 2018, according to casualty figures by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

Baghdad came on top of the worst affected Governorate, with 101 civilian casualties (31 killed, 70 injured), followed by Anbar (15 killed and 37 injured).

Iraqi family killed as unidentified gunmen storm house in Diyala

Unidentified gunmen killed on Sunday an Iraqi family composed of three persons in Diyala province, a security source was quoted as saying.

“An owner of a dessert restaurant as well as his wife and daughter were killed in an armed attack launched by unidentified gunmen on their house in al-Tajneed district in eastern Jalawla, 70 km northeast of Baqubah,” the source told the Baghdad Today website.

According to the source, the attackers fled the scene into an unknown location and a probe was opened into the incident.

“The bodies of the victims were moved to the forensic medicine department,” added the source.

The security situation in Iraqi has deteriorated since the emergence of Islamic State group in the country in 2014. Even after their crushing defeat, IS militants continue to pose a security threat across the nation.

A total of 75 Iraqi civilians were killed, while 179 others were injured due to acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in Iraq in September, according to casualty figures by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

Paramilitary troops repulse Islamic State attack, kill militant, north of Salahuddin

The pro-government paramilitary troops have killed Islamic State members while repelling an attack carried out, north of Salahuddin, a security source from the province said on Sunday.

“Troops of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) managed, today, to repulse a attack by Islamic State near Biji region, north of Salahuddin,” the source told Almaalomah website.

The troops “killed all members who were on board of a vehicle before they reached to the region,” the source said, adding that the security situation in stable.

Last week, two Islamic State members were arrested, while two rest houses were destroyed in an attack against a checkpoint in Samarra, Salahuddin province.

Thousands of Islamic State militants as well as Iraqi civilians were killed since the government campaign, backed by paramilitary troops and the coalition was launched in October 2016.

Islamic State continues to launch sporadic attacks across Iraq against troops. Security reports indicate that the militant group still poses threat against stability in the country. The group still has dormant cells, through which it carries out attacks, across Iraq like it used to do before 2014.

In December, Iraq announced gaining control on all the territories that were captured by Islamic State, since 2014.

Car bomb attack in Iraq leaves two people killed

Two Iraqi people were killed Sunday in a car bomb blast in al-Rashad district in the oil-rich Iraqi province of Kirkuk.

Speaking to German Press Agency DPA, security sources said that a bomb planted by armed men on a road between Nisan 7 area and al-Rashad district in Kirkuk went off while a vehicle carrying two people was passing by the area.

“The explosion left two people killed,” the sources said without giving further details.

Violence in the country has surged further with the emergence of Islamic State extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.

The surge in violence between armed groups and government forces has resulted in over five million internally displaced persons across Iraq and left more than 11 million in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Iraqi troops kill four Islamic State terrorists in ancient city of Hit

Iraqi authorities announced on Saturday the murder of four Islamic State militants during a clampdown in the ancient city of Hit in Anbar province.

“Al-Jazeera forces managed during a preemptive security operation to kill four terrorists inside a cave in western Hit,” the Dijlah TV channel quoted the Iraqi Security Media Center as saying in a statement.

According to the statement, the security forces launched a manhunt in Hit district in search of other IS terrorists.

Iraq declared victory over Islamic State last December with the help of a US-led alliance, having retaken all the territory captured by the extremists in 2014 and 2015.

Isolated cells believed to be linked to the Islamic State group remain active in some parts of the country. In recent weeks, suspected Islamic State insurgents have carried out several attacks targeting civilians and security forces across the nation.

US-Led Coalition Strikes Facilities Used by Daesh (ISIS)

On Oct. 22 a Coalition strike destroyed several buildings used by Daesh (ISIS) to launch attacks against Syrian Democratic Force partners in As Susah, Syria. One of those facilities used by Daesh was a mosque that was being used as a defensive fighting position and command center. The strike killed several Daesh as they were actively firing on coalition partner forces, which eliminated another Daesh capability from the battlefield.

As the second coalition strike on an active Daesh fighting position originating from a mosque in less than a week, Daesh demonstrates desperation and the willingness to misuse protected structures to launch military attacks against SDF and Coalition forces.

Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve and its partners continue to pursue the lasting defeat of ISIS in designated parts of Iraq and Syria.

Operation Roundup, which began May 1 for the defeat of ISIS in the Middle Euphrates River Valley and Iraqi- Syrian border region, has continued to gain ground and remove terrorists from the battlefield through offensive operations coupled with precision Coalition strike support.

Combined Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve and its partner forces' operations are exerting pressure on ISIS senior leaders and associates, as well as degrading, disrupting and dismantling ISIS organizational structures throughout Iraq and Syria.

Weekly Strike Summary

Between Oct. 7 and Oct. 13, CJTF-OIR coalition military forces conducted 137 strikes consisting of 225 engagements in Iraq and Syria.

On Oct. 13 in Syria, coalition military forces conducted 23 strikes consisting of 34 engagements against ISIS targets.

•             Near Abu Kamal, 23 strikes engaged 18 tactical units, and destroyed 11 supply routes, 6 mortars, four staging areas, one weapons cache, one piece of heavy equipment, one IED factory, and one fighting position.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Oct.13, 2018.

On Oct. 12 in Syria, coalition military forces conducted 36 strikes consisting of 56 engagements against ISIS targets.

•             Near Abu Kamal, 36 strikes engaged 15 tactical units, and destroyed 20 fighting positions, five mortars, four staging areas, one tunnel, and one assembly area site.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Oct.12, 2018.

On Oct. 11 in Syria, coalition military forces conducted 20 strikes consisting of 45 engagements against ISIS targets.

•             Near Abu Kamal, 20 strikes engaged six tactical units, and destroyed 21 fighting positions, four mortars, three staging areas, and two supply routes.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Oct. 11, 2018.

On Oct. 10 in Syria, coalition military forces conducted 33 strikes consisting of 50 engagements against ISIS targets.

•             Near Abu Kamal, 33 strikes engaged 18 tactical units, and destroyed 15 fighting positions, 11 mortars, two command and control centers, one tech vehicle, and two vehicle-borne IEDs.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Oct. 10, 2018.

On Oct. 9 in Syria, coalition military forces conducted nine strikes consisting of 14 engagements against ISIS targets.

•             Near Abu Kamal, nine strikes engaged two tactical units, and destroyed one fighting position, one observation point, three supply routes and suppressed one mortar.

On Oct. 9 in Iraq, coalition military forces conducted one strike consisting of one engagement against an ISIS target.

•             Near Taji (Iraq), one strike engaged two tactical units.

On Oct. 8 in Syria, coalition military forces conducted five strikes consisting of 10 engagements against ISIS targets.

•             Near Abu Kamal, five strikes engaged seven tactical units, and destroyed one weapons cache, one staging area and one supply route.

   There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Oct. 8, 2018.

On Oct 7, 2018 in Syria, coalition military forces conducted 10 military strikes consisting of 15 engagements against ISIS targets.

•             Near Abu Kamal, 10 strikes engaged eight tactical units, and destroyed two command and control centers, one vehicle-borne IED, one mortar, two staging areas and three supply routes.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Oct. 7, 2018.
