Over thirty people killed, injured in bomb blast, north of Baghdad

Over thirty people were killed and injured as a bomb blast took place in north of Baghdad, a security source said on Wednesday.

Speaking to Almaalomah website, the source said “a suicide attacker blew up himself in Heseiwa region in Tarmiyah district, north of Baghdad.”

The death toll, according to the source, “went up to seven civilians, while the injured number reached 25 civilians.”

“Security troops cordoned off the blast scene. The victims were taken to hospital, while the wounded were transferred to nearby hospital for treatment,” the source added.

Earlier today, the Iraqi Security Media Center was quoted saying that an attacker targeted a “mourning ceremony” in Tarimiya, leaving a number of civilians dead and wounded.

A total of 68 Iraqis were killed and another 122 injured in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in Iraq in April, according to casualty figures recorded by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

As many as 3,298 civilians were killed and 4,781 others were wounded in 2017, excluding Anbar civilian casualty figures for November and December, which are not available, UNAMI said in a report in December.

Islamic State continues to launch sporadic attacks across Iraq against troops. Security reports indicate that the militant group still poses threat against stability in the country.

Iraqi military says five prominent Islamic State leaders killed, southwest of Kirkuk

Five Islamic State members were killed in southwest of Kirkuk, the Iraqi military announced on Tuesday.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Security Media Center said, “depending on information from the intelligence of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces), Federal Police troops managed to killed five prominent Islamic State members who took part in the attack against a village in southwest of Kirkuk.”

The information revealed that the victims were “Adnan Ahmed Hassan al-Souwar, known as Abu Radwan, who was the military emir of Riyad town in Hawija.”

Among the members also were “Shukr Shallal al-Ouseibi, who was a leader within the so-called Kirkuk State. Abu Talha, known as al-Shayeb, a member in Kirkuk as well as Hassan Ali Thalj, known as Abu Thar.”

According to the statement, “Abu Radwan, is one of those who planned and took part in al-Saadounia crime, which targeted PMFs in al-Saadounia region in Hawija.”

On Monday, PMFs announced killing some IS members, southwest of Kirkuk.

Islamic State continues to launch sporadic attacks across Iraq against troops. Security reports indicate that the militant group still poses threat against stability in the country.

Thousands of Islamic State militants as well as Iraqi civilians were killed since the government campaign, backed by paramilitary troops and the coalition was launched in October 2016 to fight the militant group, which declared a self-styled “caliphate” from Mosul in June 2014.

Iraqi police kill Islamic State security official in Kirkuk

Federal police of Iraq killed on Monday the so-called Islamic State (IS) security official in Hawija district in Kirkuk, a police chief was quoted as saying.

“Troops of the federal police, in coordination with the Iraqi intelligence service, killed Ahmed Talaat al-Turkmani, codenamed as Abu Omar al-Turkmani, in a joint operation in Shalaka area, south of Kirkuk,” Knooz Media quoted Federal Police Chief Raed Shaker Jawdat as saying in a statement.

“Al-Turkmani was responsible for the security file in Hawija and Riyadh districts in Kirkuk,” Jawdat added.

In October, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared that Iraqi troops recaptured Hawija, a main town held by Islamic State in the country.

The town had fallen to IS in June 2014, when the militant group seized control of much of northern and western Iraq and proclaimed the creation of a self-styled “caliphate”.

There, Islamic State’s reign forced thousands to flee to refugee camps, while hundreds had been executed by the group for attempting to escape the area or contacting security forces.

The offensive on Hawija began on 21 September and has involved army, police and special forces units, as well as the Shia-led paramilitary Popular Mobilization Forces.

Despite the victory over IS in the city, observers say IS is believed to constitute a security threat even after the group’s defeat at its main havens across Iraqi provinces.

4 Islamic State fighters killed while trying to target security sites in Kirkuk

Four Islamic State (IS) fighters were killed Monday while trying to attack security and residential sites in Kirkuk, Alghad Press quoted the security media center as saying in a statement.

“Troops of the 11th brigade of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) killed four (members) of the Islamic State group near a security checkpoint in al-Riyadh district, southwest of Kirkuk,” the statement read.

“According to preliminary reports, they were planning to target security and residential sites in the city,” the center said, adding that the pro-government forces of al-Hashd al-Shaabi managed to foil their plot and launched an operation to secure the whole area.

Kirkuk officials previously urged reinforcing military troops in the south and west of the province, as the region still has Islamic State members who escaped during liberation of Hawija to remote areas.

The Islamic State group appeared on the international scene in 2014 when it seized large swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria, declaring the establishment of an Islamic “caliphate” from Mosul city.

Later on, the group has become notorious for its brutality, including mass killings, abductions and beheadings, prompting the U.S. to lead an international coalition to destroy it.

Three tribal fighters killed in bomb blast, northwest of Kirkuk

Three tribal fighters were killed on Monday due to a bomb blast that occurred, northwest of Kirkuk, a security source from the province was quoted saying.

Speaking to AlSumaria News, the source said “a bomb placed on the side of a road near one of the villages in Dibs town, northwest of Kirkuk, went off, today, targeting a vehicle for tribal mobilization fighters. Three personnel were killed.”

“Security forces, according to the source, who preferred anonymity, “transferred the victims to forensic medicine department and conducted investigations.”

Iraqi warplanes destroy Islamic State logistics center in Syria

Iraqi warplanes carried out an airstrike on an Islamic State (IS) command center inside Syria, the Joint Operations Command was quoted as saying Monday.

“Acting on intelligence reports, the Iraqi F-16 warplanes destroyed a building used by the IS group as a command and logistics support center in southern al-Deshisha area in Syria,” the command said in a statement.

The air raid was launched upon directives by Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, the statement read. No further details were given, but the center said more information about the result of the airstrike will be released later.

The Iraqi air force has already carried out several air strikes against Islamic State in Syria since last year, with the approval of the Syrian government of President Bashar Assad and the US-led coalition fighting Islamic State.

Iraq declared the collapse of Islamic State’s territorial influence earlier in November with the recapture of Rawa, a city on Anbar’s western borders with Syria, which was the group’s last bastion in Iraq.

Despite the group’s crushing defeat at its main havens across Iraq, Islamic State continues to launch sporadic attacks against troops with security reports warning that the militant group still poses a threat against stability in the country.

Operation Inherent Resolve and its partners continue to strike Daesh (ISIS) targets in designated parts of Iraq and Syria.
 
Ongoing operations by Iraqi Security Forces and Syrian Democratic Forces, supported by CJTF-OIR efforts, demonstrate that work remains to defeat Daesh. Coalition strikes continue to target Daesh throughout Iraq under the leadership of Iraqi authorities. "All Coalition air strikes are carried out with the consent of the Iraqi government," said Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi in a press conference April 1, 2018.
 
The build-up to Operation Roundup has seen a significant increase in offensive operations against Daesh. A recent coalition strike in Dashisha on April 29th killed Nur al-Din, an Iraqi leader with the Daesh terrorist financial network. His removal deprives Daesh of a key leader for financial resourcing and demonstrates the effectiveness of partner force efforts throughout Operation Roundup to rid the Iraqi Syria border regions and the middle Euphrates River Valley of Daesh remnants.
 
Combined Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve and its partners continue to exert pressure on Daesh senior leaders and associates in order to degrade, disrupt and dismantle Daesh structures.

A strike, as defined in the Coalition release, refers to one or more kinetic engagements that occur in roughly the same geographic location to produce a single, sometimes cumulative effect in that location.  For example, a single aircraft delivering a single weapon against a lone Daesh vehicle is one strike, but so is multiple aircraft delivering dozens of weapons against a group of Daesh-held buildings and weapon systems in a compound, having the cumulative effect of making that facility harder or impossible to use. Strike assessments are based on initial reports and may be refined.
 
CJTF-OIR does not report the number or type of aircraft employed in a strike, the number of munitions dropped in each strike, or the number of individual munition impact points against a target. The information used to compile the daily strike releases is based on 'Z' or Greenwich Mean Time.
