Iraqi troops kill 14 Islamic State militants, destroy 4 armored vehicles in Anbar

Up to 14 members of the Islamic State group were killed and four of their armored vehicles were destroyed during a security operation in Anbar, a military commander was quoted as saying.

Colonel Shaker Obeid al-Rishawy told BasNews website on Wednesday that security forces received intelligence reports about the presence of a group of IS terrorists in a desert area, south of A-Rutbah district in western Anbar.

“Immediately, the troops clashed with the IS terrorists, killing 14 of them and destroying four of their armored vehicles,” al-Rishawy pointed out.

He added that three underground hotbeds that were used by the militant group for storing ammunition were destroyed as well.

The Islamic State group appeared on the international scene in 2014 when it seized large swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria, declaring the establishment of an Islamic “caliphate” from Mosul city.

Later on, the group has become notorious for its brutality, including mass killings, abductions and beheadings, prompting the U.S. to lead an international coalition to destroy it.

Despite the group’s crushing defeat at its main havens across Iraq, Islamic State continues to launch sporadic attacks against troops with security reports warning that the militant group still poses a threat against stability in the country.

Bodies of 12 Islamic State members found, west of Anbar

Twelve bodies of Islamic State members were found in the wake of an airstrike, carried out by the U.S.-led Coalition, west of Anbar, the Security Media Center said on Tuesday.

In a statement on Tuesday, Maj. Gen. Yahia Rasool, spokesperson for the center, said “the U.S.-led Coalition carried out an airstrike, under supervision of the Joint Operations Command and coordination of the Jazira Operations Commad, targeting a cave, where the militants were hiding, in one of the valleys, northwest of Rawa.”

“After the troops inspected the region, bodies of 12 Islamic State militants were found,” the statement said, adding that the strike leaders of the militant groups were among the killed ones.

Earlier today, news reports said 20 IS members were killed in an operation that targeted four tunnels in Annah, west of the province.

Police conscript killed in armed attack, west of Anbar

A police conscript was killed in an armed attack, west of Anbar, security source was quoted saying on Tuesday.

Speaking to Alghad Press, the source said, “a conscript of the emergency forces in Anbar was killed, last night, in al-Sahliya village, west of Hit, as three unidentified gunmen attacked his house.”

Security troops, according to the source, “cordoned off the accident scene and conducted investigations.”

On Saturday, a policeman was killed, while two others were injured in a bomb blast, from the remnants of war against Islamic State in Qaim town, west of Anbar.

A total of 79 Iraqi civilians were killed and another 99 injured in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in Iraq in July 2018, according to casualty figures recorded by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

Baghdad was the worst affected Governorate, with 63 civilian casualties (30 killed, 33 injured), followed by Kirkuk (8 killed, 34 injured) and Nineveh (13 killed and 05 injured).

Iraqi troops kill three Islamic State militants in Salahuddin

A security source said on Tuesday that three Islamic State militants were killed last night as they were trying to sneak into al-Daur district in Salahuddin.

Speaking to Al-Watan Newspaper, the source said that a force from the 21st brigade of the paramilitary Al-Hashd Al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) set an ambush last night for a group of IS militants, who were trying to infiltrate into al-Daur district in order to target security premises and houses there.

According to the source, the troops managed to kill three of the infiltrators while two others fled the scene into an unknown location.

None of the pro-government fighters were either killed or wounded in the operation, said the source.

IS declared a self-styled “caliphate” in a third of Iraq and neighboring Syria in 2014. A government campaign, backed by a U.S.-led international coalition and paramilitary forces, was launched in 2016 to retake IS-held regions, managing to retake all havens, most notably the city of Mosul, the group’s previously proclaimed capital.

Three people of one family killed in armed attack, fourth kidnapped, south of Salahuddin

Three people were killed, while the fourth was abducted in an armed attack, south of Salahuddin, a security source said on Monday.

Speaking to Baghdad Today, the source said, “unidentified gunmen killed, in the evening, three people of one family and kidnapped another one in Zor Hawi al-Busat region, north of Samarra.”

The gunmen then fled toward unknown destination, the source, who preferred anonymity, added.

“Security troops cordoned off the region in search for the perpetrators and the kidnapped one,” according to the source.

Senior Islamic State member killed in airstrike between Diyala, Salahuddin

A prominent Islamic State member killed in an airstrike on the borders between Diyala, Salahuddin provinces, a security source said on Monday.

“Confirmed information indicated death of Abu Hamza, a prominent Islamic State member in Mutaibija basin, on borders between Diyala and Salahuddin in an airstrike two days ago,” the source told Baghdad Today website.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source added, “Abu Hamza is a prominent within the so-called Diyala State. He is involved in several operations against checkpoints in liberated villages in Udhaim town and areas in its vicinity.”

On Sunday, three IS militants were reportedly killed before fleeing towards desert areas in Mutaibija.

Nine people killed in booby-trapped house in Mosul, once back from refugee camp

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) A family, composed of nine people, was killed as their booby-trapped house exploded, west of Mosul, a security source from Nineveh police said on Monday.

“A family, composed of nine persons, was killed after they returned, this morning, from al-Jadaa refugee camp back to their house in al-Yabsat region in western Mosul. Their house, which was booby-trapped by Islamic State members, went off once they entered,” Cap. Ahmed Tawfiq, told BasNews.

Security troops, according to Tawfiq, “rushed to the blast spot and transferred the victims to forensic medicine department in Mosul.”

On Sunday, an officer was reportedly killed, while detonating a bomb in al-Quds district, east of Mosul. Moreover, two army soldiers were injured as a bomb blast targeted a military patrol on the main road to Hammam al-Alil region, south of the city.

Two Islamic State members, who targeted a mayor in west of Mosul, through a bomb, were killed, the Interior Ministry said on Monday.

In a statement by the Security Media Center, Maj. Gen. Saad Maan said joint troops “backed by Nineveh police managed to kill two Islamic State members, who planted a bomb to target the mayor of al-Quds district.”

The militants, according to the statement, “were killed during confrontations in west of Mosul.”

Several Islamic State members were killed in confrontations against Federal Police, west of Mosul City, a local official said on Sunday.

In remarks to the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s website, Kermanj Abdullah, head of the party’s branch in Makhmur, said “the confrontations took place when Federal Police troops from Makhmur were heading toward villages of Qarraj region. As they arrived, they were attacked by Islamic State members.”

As per preliminary information, “several Islamic State members were killed,” Abdullah said.

Earlier today, thirteen Islamic State members were arrested as they attempted infiltration into Bazwaya village, east of Mosul.

Combined Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve Monthly Civilian Casualty Report

The Coalition has worked by, with and through partners since 2014 to defeat Daesh (ISIS) in designated parts of Iraq and Syria.

The Coalition conducted a total of 29,826 strikes between August 2014 and end of June 2018. During this period, based on information available, CJTF-OIR assesses at least 1059 civilians have been unintentionally killed by Coalition strikes since the start of Operation Inherent Resolve.
