Las Vegas Shooter, Stephen Paddock, Had a Pilot’s License, Was Possibly Going Through a Divorce & Sued a Las Vegas Strip Casino in 2012

Sheriff Joe Lombardo said details about Paddock’s background are still being determined by investigators. A family member told NBC News they would be releasing a statement through police on Monday. NBC News reports that Paddock was married and going through a divorce or otherwise splitting up with his wife, though it was not clear who that woman is. NBC also said it is not known if the marital issues played any role in the shooting.

Paddock filed a lawsuit against a casino in 2012. It was dismissed in 2014.

Clark County court records show that Paddock sued a Las Vegas strip hotel in 2012. He filed the lawsuit against Cosmopolitan Hotels & Resorts Inc. in September 2012. The case was dismissed with prejudice on October 3, 2014, and then later settled through arbitration. Records show he was suing for “Negligence – Premises Liability.” Details about the case were not immediately available.

Other public records show that Paddock had an airmen’s certification. According to the FAA, Paddock was issued the private pilot license on November 17, 2003, and was rated as being able to fly a single-engine airplane and an instrument airplane. He last had a medical examination in February 2008. “MUST HAVE AVAILABLE GLASSES FOR NEAR VISION,” the records state. He was living in Mesquite, Texas, in Dallas County, at the time.

Paddock owned two aircraft, according to NBC News. Paddock appears to have worked as an accountant or auditor, ABC News reports. He also had a hunting license in Alaska, according to ABC.

His Brother Says the Family Is ‘Dumbfounded’ by What Happened & Says the Shooter, Who Had No Religious or Political Affiliation, ‘Must Have Snapped’

Tracy Connor, a NBC News investigative reporter, spoke to Paddock’s family and was told they are shocked by what happened. His brother told Connor there were no warning signs. He said he was “just a guy” who lived in Mesquite and went to shows in Las Vegas and gambled there. The brother said he had a girlfriend and was semi-retired after having a series of jobs he would not get into.

Eric Paddock, the gunman’s brother, told the Daily Mail that the family is “dumbfounded” and said there was “absolutely no indication he could do something like this” and he had no political or religious affiliation. Eric Paddock said “he was just a guy. Something happened, he snapped or something.”

Eric Paddock, who lives in Central Florida along with many members of the shooter’s family, told the Daily Mail, “He’s my brother, we don’t have a very close relationship but we talk occasionally. There’s no rhyme or reason here, it makes no sense. He has no political affiliation, no religious affiliation, as far as we know. This wasn’t a terror attack.”

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Eric Paddock has talked to police. He lives in Orlando along with other family members. Stephen Paddock once owned property in Melbourne, Florida, public records show, but it is not clear if he ever lived there, the newspaper reports. He also had an address in Nevada at the same time. He bought it in 2013 and sold it for $235,000, the Sentinel reprots.

“We are completely dumbfounded,” Eric Paddock told the newspaper. “We can’t understand what happened.”

50 killed after shooting on Las Vegas Strip; suspect ID'd

At least 406 people have been taken to hospitals following a massacre on the Las Vegas Strip overnight, police said. At least 50 people were killed in the shooting rampage during a Jason Aldean concert. An off-duty Las Vegas police officer was among those killed, the police department said.

Authorities say the suspect, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock of Mesquite, Nevada, fired from the 32nd floor of the nearby Mandalay Bay hotel.

Officers found at least eight weapons, including multiple long rifles, in Paddock's room, Las Vegas Police Undersheriff Kevin McMahill told CNN.

Paddock was eventually killed. "He was shot, but I cannot tell you that it was the police that shot him," McMahill said. "He may have self-inflicted that gunshot wound. Those details are still emerging throughout our investigation."

Festival turns into massacre

The massacre started around 10:08 p.m. Sunday (1:08 a.m. ET Monday) at the Route 91 Harvest festival, Lombardo said. Police don't believe there are any more shooters. Two Las Vegas police officers are being treated at a local hospital for injuries they sustained during the shooting, Lombardo said. One is in critical condition, and the other sustained minor injuries. In addition, the sheriff stated that there were off-duty officers attending the concert who may have died. The identities of those officers have not been released. "Pray for Las Vegas," the city's mayor, Carolyn Goodman, tweeted.

"Thank you to all our first responders out there now." Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval said on Twitter that a "tragic & heinous act of violence has shaken the #Nevada family" and offered prayers to all those affected by "this act of cowardice." Aldean posted a statement on Instagram saying that he and his crew were safe. "My Thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved tonight. It hurts my heart that this would happen to anyone who was just coming out to enjoy what should have been a fun night. #heartbroken#stopthehate," he wrote.

The investigation

So far, massacre has no known link to overseas terrorism or terror groups, a US official with knowledge of the case said. And a woman described as a "person of interest" after the attack is not believed to be involved in the shooting, police said in a statement. "Marilou Danley is no longer being sought out as a person of interest," the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said. "LVMPD detectives have made contact with her and do not believe she is involved with the shooting on the strip."

'We just ran for our lives

Aldean, his wife Brittany, his band and crew were able to get offstage safely and unharmed. But fans described chaos after the barrage of bullets. Rachel De Kerf filmed her escape from the venue using her cell phone, starting just after the first shots were fired. She described ongoing gunfire, and played out the video she had recorded during which more than five minutes of gunfire were intermittently audible. "The gunshots lasted for 10-15 minutes. It didn't stop," she said. "We just ran for our lives." De Kerf's sister, Monique Dumas, said that everyone instantly crouched when they heard the shots. "The band was rushed off the stage, the floodlights came on the crowd, and you see on the right hand of the stage the person who was injured, so they're calling for medics, calling for security, then there was gunfire again," Dumas said.

'Go, go, go'

SiriusXM Country radio host Storme Warren was on the side of the stage as Aldean was performing when the shots rang out. "I thought it was fireworks going off and maybe it mistriggered, and then it happened again. And when it happened the third time, we knew something was wrong," Warren said. Warren said he heard "more than 50 shots fired and probably in the hundreds."

"The shells were hitting the deck of the stage when I was on it," he said, adding that he could still hear the shells as he went under the stage for protection. A concertgoer told CNN affiliate KLAS that everybody was lying on top of each other trying to get out of the shooter's way. "Everybody's hiding everywhere, they're hiding under the bleachers and the stanchions, anywhere they could and everyone is telling us to 'run, run as fast as you can,'" she told KLAS. "And my husband and I ran out toward our car, and there were people hiding underneath my car for cover and there was a gentleman who was shot and he said, 'Can you help me?' And so I put him in my car and I had like six people in my car, people without shoes, running, just to get away."

At least 50 dead, more than 200 hurt in Las Vegas shooting

LAS VEGAS, Nevada, Oct 2 (Reuters) - A gunman killed at least 50 people and wounded more than 200 at a country music festival on the Las Vegas Strip on Sunday, raining down rapid fire from the 32nd floor of a hotel for several minutes before he was shot dead by police.

The death toll, which police emphasized was preliminary and tentative, would make the attack the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, eclipsing last year's massacre of 49 people at an Orlando night club.

Thousands of panicked people fled the scene, in some cases trampling one another as law enforcement officers scrambled to locate and kill the gunman. Shocked concertgoers, some with blood on their clothes, wandered the streets after the attack.

The suspect was a local Las Vegas man who acted alone and was not believed to be connected to any militant group, Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo told reporters.

"We have no idea what his belief system was," Lombardo said. "Right now, we believe he was the sole aggressor and the scene is static."

Authorities were seeking a woman they named as Marilou Danley, the suspected gunman's roommate. Lombardo described her as Asian, 4 foot 11 inches (1.5 m) tall, 111 pounds (50 kg). He gave no details of whether she was suspected of involvement in the attack but described her as an "associate."

Police had located two cars that belonged to the suspect and also believed they had located the woman.

Lombardo said rumors of other shootings or explosives such as car bombs in the area were false. Video taken of the attack showed panicked crowds fleeing as sustained rapid gunfire ripped through the area.

Las Vegas's casinos, nightclubs and shopping draw some 3.5 million visitors from around the world each year and the area was packed with visitors when the shooting broke out shortly after 10 p.m. (0400 GMT).

Mike McGarry, a 53-year-old financial adviser from Philadelphia, said he was at the concert when he heard hundreds of shots ring out.

"It was crazy - I laid on top of the kids. They're 20. I'm 53. I lived a good life," McGarry said. The back of his shirt bore footmarks, after people ran over him in the panicked crowd. Over 50 dead, 200 injured in Las Vegas after deadliest shooting in modern US history

More than 50 people were killed and 200 injured when a lone gunman opened fire from a perch high up in the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas Sunday night, police said, making it the deadliest shooting in modern U.S. history.

The "nonstop gunfire," according to one witness, sent bystanders outside the resort on the Vegas strip ducking for cover and scrambling for their lives. Tourists hid in their hotel rooms and flights headed into the McCarran International Airport were held elsewhere.

Bystanders sprang into action, caring for the wounded and at least one described someone dying in their arms.

Police said a Las Vegas police officer who was off-duty attending the concert is among the dead.

One video showed the terrifying aftermath as the injured lay on stretchers or on the ground with responders and bystanders surrounding them to give aid. Bystanders made makeshift stretchers out of police barricades, plugged wounds with their hands and used their clothing to try to stanch the bleeding from the wounded.

Videos filmed by onlookers gave a window into the chaos that ensued, with some thinking that fireworks were going off. The final night of the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival was taking place across the street from Mandalay Bay. Jason Aldean was the night's headliner; other performers included country stars Jake Owen, Big & Rich, Luke Combs and Dylan Scott.

In the wake of the shooting, the Las Vegas Police Department said the suspected gunman, who was believed to be a local resident, was on 32nd floor of Mandalay Bay hotel. Police responded to the scene, engaged him and he is now dead. Law enforcement officials identified the suspect as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock.

Authorities were looking for a companion of the shooter, Marilou Danley, and authorities later said this morning, "We're confident -- but not 100 percent sure -- we have located the female person of interest."

"We were just at the concert there, and Jason Aldean was playing," one of the concertgoers, named Mike Cronk, 48, a retired teacher, told ABC News. "Kind of sounded like some fireworks going off. I think there was the first kind of volley, and then all of the sudden second volley. My buddy's like, 'I just got hit, you know.' He got hit three times. Then people started diving for the ground. And it just continued.

"It was pretty much chaotic," Cronk continued. "Lots of people got hit. ... It took a while to get him out. We had to get him over the fence and hiding under the stage for a while, you know, to be safe. And, finally, we had to move him because he had three chest wounds."

Cronk said his group were finally able to track down an ambulance "and basically the one guy ended up dying in my arms because he was bleeding," he said. "And my buddy got in there. We got three more people in the ambulance. ... But I just got a message from my buddy -- and he's going to be okay."

As bursts of gunfire crackled in the air, people outside of the casino ducked and screamed, according to video filmed by witnesses.

"We're going to get trampled if we don't go," a bystander could be heard saying in a dramatic video of the incident. Confusion appeared to abound as those outside fled the scene with another person saying, "it's fireworks."

Michelle Leonard, who was located in a booth near the main entrance of the arena, said the shooting just “kept going nonstop.”

Leonard said “mass confusion” unfolded as people tried to flee the scene. She said the shooting seemed like it went on for more than a minute.

“I had no idea of where it was coming from or where to run to," Leonard said.

She said she injured her leg as she tried to escape.

Another witness, Jake Freeman, said he was standing on the rooftop of a nearby hotel when the shooting broke out.

“I had a bird’s-eye view” of the shooting, Freeman said in a phone interview with ABC News. He said he saw "crowds of people running” as people “dropped to the ground.”

“At the moment we didn’t realize that they were being shot,” he said.

Aldean, who performed at the country concert Sunday night, wrote on Instagram, "Tonight has been beyond horrific. I still dont know what to say but wanted to let everyone know that Me and my Crew are safe. My Thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved tonight. It hurts my heart that this would happen to anyone who was just coming out to enjoy what should have been a fun night."

An official with McCarran International Airport said "an airport perimeter fence near the concert venue was breached by people fleeing the scene of the incident."

"Airport staff responded and have transported those people to the designated evacuation site," the officials said. "The fence line is once again secured."

Flights in and out of the McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas were temporarily halted due to the incident.

ATF agents have responded to the scene and the FBI is assisting with the investigation. The FBI is also supporting local law enforcement efforts in Las Vegas.

Mandalay Bay Resort tweeted, "Our thoughts & prayers are with the victims of last night's tragic events. We’re grateful for the immediate actions of our first responders."

The resort said in a statement that "law enforcement requested that we put hotels in the vicinity on lockdown to ensure guest safety."

President Donald Trump tweeted, "My warmest condolences and sympathies to the victims and families of the terrible Las Vegas shooting. God bless you!"

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval tweeted, "A tragic & heinous act of violence has shaken the #Nevada family. Our prayers are w/ the victims & all affected by this act of cowardice."
