Daily Air Strikes, Attacks on Syrian Cities Continue by US-Russian-Iranian-Regime Forces, Foreign Military Basis Spread in Post ISIS Syria

August 7, 2017

Editor's Note:

The coalition which fights the Islamic State and other Sunni groups in Syria consists of US-led NATO forces, Russian forces, Syrian Alewite government forces, Iranian-backed Shi'i militias, and Kurdish peshmerga forces. The coalition's continuous attacks have resulted in the killing of thousands of Iraqi and Syrian Sunni Muslim Arabs and the eviction of millions of them as a result of the destruction of their cities and villages.

The end outcome is going to be the weakening and possible dismantling of Iraqi and Syrian states as well as the eviction (ethnic cleansing of) Sunni Muslim Arabs, particularly from the upper Euphrates region of northwestern Iraq and northeastern Syria.

The larger context for understanding the Syrian war (and other wars in the Middle East) is that it contributes to the implementation of the Zionist-Israeli plan of destroying the Arab Middle Eastern states in preparation for the establishment of the greater Israeli empire, from the Nile of Egypt to the Euphrates of Iraq.

New violations in the truce of the Syrian south and the north of Homs

SOHR, 07/08/2017

Activists in the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights observed a new violation to truce of the northern countryside of Homs, which was put in effect with an Egyptian-Russian agreement, at noon of the 3rd of August 2017, where the regime forces targeted intensively by shells and heavy machine guns, places in the area of Al-Houla in the northern countryside of Homs, followed by targeting by the factions to the checkpoints of the regime forces in the vicinity of the area, and no information about casualties was reported yet and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights published yesterday that the truce of the northern countryside of Homs is still in effect, since it started with an Egyptian-Russian agreement at noon of the 3rd of August 2017, amid calmness prevailing in the area, intervened by a shell by the regime forces on Al-Houla area, resulting in material damage, and that was documented as a new violate of the truce, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights documented hours ago that it documented the regime forces targeting with missiles places in the area of al-Houla in the northern countryside, and no information on casualties.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also published yesterday that it documented several breaches on Thursday night, where the regime forces targeted with their heavy machine guns, places in al-Taybah area in the northern countryside of Homs, in conjunction with the targeting by several shells on areas in the village of Ghernata by the regime forces in the same countryside, and there were also an exchange of targeting between the regime forces and the factions in the northern countryside of Homs.

The regime forces targeted with several artillery shells areas in the villages of Al-Farhaniyah and the town of TeirMa’alah, in conjunction with the opening of their heavy fire on the outskirts of Al-Houla area. The regime forces also targeted the outskirts of TeirMa’alah town by heavy machine guns, amid shelling and fire shooting of heavy machine guns that targeted the village of Om Sharshuh near Talbisa city in the northern countryside of Homs, causing material damage, and no information about casualties so far, while the factions targeted by shells and heavy machine guns areas in the villages of Hosh Tasnin and Jabburin and other places controlled by the regime forces in the northern countryside  of Homs.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also documented that a fighter from an Islamic movement who died in shelling by the regime forces on areas west of Talbisa city in the northern countryside of Homs, while others were injured, and this is considered the first person to be killed since the implementation of the truce in the northern countryside of Homs, where the Russian forces deployed tens of its military police members on the contact lines between the areas controlled by the Islamic and repel factions on one hand, and the areas controlled by the regime forces and their allied militiamen on the other.

Fears prevailed since the implementation of the truce, that the agreement applied in the northern countryside of Homs, might be similar to the Eastern Ghouta Agreement, which began on the 22nd of July 2017, which did not withstand the breaches carried out by the regime forces on daily basis, and included artillery and missile shelling, believed to be ground-to-ground, and the shelling of the warplanes, which caused tens of causalities and injured civilians, in addition to the clashes that took place in areas in the Eastern Ghouta and its outskirts between the regime forces and militiamen loyal to them against the Islamic factions.

The SOHR documented the death of 10 civilians, including two children and a woman as a result of shelling by the International Coalition on areas in Al-Raqqah city.

The SOHR also documented the death of at least 64 ISIS members. Specifically, 30 members were killed in bombardments and clashes in Al-Sukhnah city, 18 members were killed in the eastern countryside of Al-Raqqah, at the southern banks of the Euphrates along with 16 members who were killed in the shelling on the eastern countryside of Hama and in clashes there.

14 members of the regime forces and their allied militiamen were killed as a result of shelling and in clashes with ISIS.

Only grains and legumes in Al-Raqqah kitchens and ISIS opens the way for about 3000 people to flee the escalated clash areas

SOHR, 05/08/2017

Azerbaijani and Asian battalions refuse to surrender and the Syrian fighters are afraid of execution in case they were not able to runaway

It seems that the violent battles in Al-Raqqah city between ISIS on one hand and the Syria Democratic Forces (SDF) backed by the US Special Forces on the other will never come to an end. Reliable Sources informed the SOHR that battles in the city have intensified during the past week. Battles were accompanied by an increase in bombings carried out by ISIS by means of booby-trapped cars in the city, mainly targeting positions of the “Euphrates Wrath” Operation Forces. Clashes caused many fatalities at both sides. Vehicles carrying the dead bodies of SDF fighters were observed heading out of Al-Raqqah city towards its western countryside. In addition, the dead bodies of the ISIS members can be observed caught in the crossfire, in areas of clashes and at the contact lines. Sources also confirmed that the pace of violence is increasing in such clashes and that they are accompanied by intensive shelling by the International Coalition on areas in the city in addition to the explosions caused by the booby-trapped cars. This led ISIS to allow around 3 thousand people to flee such areas to other areas, and most of those people headed towards SDF-controlled areas.

The SOHR observed the situation in Al-Raqqah city where tens of thousands of civilians are still present in ISIS-controlled areas, trapped between the hammer of ISIS and the anvil of the International Coalition, which causes more and more casualties one day after the other in Al-Raqqah city by means of their escalated daily shelling on the city, which used to be the main stronghold and capital of ISIS in Syria. Moreover, the only way out of that trap is planted with landmines that leave more martyrs and injured each time. The SOHR documented the exhumation of 6 dead bodies during the past 24 hours by the SDF. The dead bodies belonged to 6 civilians who tried to escape the inevitable death hovering around them and their families to faraway areas only to find death waiting for them on the way of salvation. Such fear of death was accompanied by the lack of a lot of food items and significant decrease in others. Reliable sources confirmed the absence of vegetables and fruits in the city market in addition to the significant shortage in medicines and drinking water and their surging prices. Thus, the civilians still residing in Al-Raqqah depend mainly on grains, rice and legumes which have been stored by the city citizens or the shops. Moreover, ISIS members are breaking into the shops and seizing its contents, especially clothes shops.

The SOHR also learned from reliable sources that ISIS depend on slaughtering sheep as a source of food and on preparing the food of their soldiers in their own kitchens. Those reliable sources confirmed to the SOHR that many ISIS members, especially of Syrian nationality, wish to leave ISIS-controlled areas and flee the city of Al-Raqqah but they are afraid of getting executed by the Organization in case they fail to escape. On the other hand, the Asian fighters refuse to surrender as the Azerbaijani and Asian Battalions are still centered in areas of clashes refusing to surrender or escape. “We will not escape, it is either victory or death” said their members. In addition, the spirit of resentment is prevailing among the people of Al-Raqqah city because of the daily massacres perpetrated by the International Coalition, targeting civilians and the displaced who fled to the city under the pretext of the existence of an ISIS sniper in a building or on top of another.

It is worth mentioning that hundreds of families managed during the past few weeks, since the start of the Grand Battle of Al-Raqqah on the 6th of June 2017, to flee ISIS-controlled areas to areas controlled by the SDF who lead the “Euphrates Wrath” Operation which was launched on the 6th of November 2016 and who took control of vast areas of Al-Raqqah city until they managed to control over %50 of Al-Raqqah city area, which was considered the main stronghold and capital of ISIS in Syria.

Pictures by the SOHR showing the arrival of the displaced to the southern part of Al-Raqqah city which is under the control of the SDF. Tens of the displaced arrived to Nazlat Shhada neighborhood, including some injured persons who received treatment there upon their arrival.

U.S., Russia and Iran Battle to Build Bases in Syria as ISIS Falls

SOHR, 02/08/2017

Three of the leading international powers involved in Syria’s war—the U.S., Russia and Iran—are looking to expand and fortify their military presence in the country by building and upgrading foreign bases, with some already in the works.

U.S. special operations forces have been involved in Syria for years, and the U.S. appears to be broadening the platforms from which it operates. Earlier this month, satellite imagery showed what appeared to be the construction of a new airstrip near Syria’s southern border with Jordan and Iraq, according to The Daily Beast. This base, along with other “temporary” installations, reportedly could be used to both battle the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) and bolster forces of the rebel Free Syrian Army in areas where fighters supportive of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad are poised to take over. Meanwhile, Assad allies Russia and Iran have announced plans to develop their own military presence in the country.

The Pentagon, however, has been hesitant to comment on its intentions to build new bases in Syria. The U.S.’s Florida-based Central Command told The Daily Beast last week it generally does not discuss such matters “for safety purposes,” and its Kuwait-based, anti-ISIS operation called the Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve gave Newsweek a similar response Tuesday.

“In order to ensure operational security and force protection, the Coalition will not announce or confirm information about the capabilities, force numbers, locations, or movement of forces in or out of Iraq and Syria,” Central Command told Newsweek in an email.

The U.S. has utilized temporary military installations to fight ISIS on two fronts. The primary theater supports the majority-Kurd Syrian Democratic Forces fighting ISIS in Raqqa in northern Syria. To support local fighters here, U.S. forces have used an air base located about 90 miles north, near the city of Kobane. Expansions took place here in April, according to Stars and Stripes. On the second U.S.-backed front in Syria, special operations forces are training and assisting insurgents opposed to both ISIS and the Syrian government in the country’s southeast, where satellites reportedly caught new installations near an already established U.S. outpost situated near the Syrian border town of al-Tanf.

In a White House statement released last week, the Trump administration sought wider authorities for “temporary intermediate staging facilities, ammunition supply points, and assembly areas that have adequate force protection,” suggesting there is a desire among top officials to expand the U.S. military presence in Syria. This move, which followed a series of U.S.-led coalition attacks on the Syrian military and its Iran-backed allies, could lead to a greater effort to establish a more solid U.S.-backed security infrastructure aimed at curbing both ISIS and Iranian influence, Al-Monitor reported last Friday.

The Syrian government considers the presence of U.S. forces in Syria illegal but has granted permission for bases to its foreign sponsors Russia and Iran, both of which have helped Syria’s armed forces regain much of the territory lost to jihadis and insurgents since 2011. Damascus has leased two major military bases to Moscow for at least the next half a century, including an air base in Latakia and a naval base in Tartous. Both of the sites are set for major expansions and renovations, something that will likely strengthen not only Russia’s foothold in western Syria but also in the eastern Mediterranean, not far from rival NATO forces.

Not far from the Russia-controlled Hmeymim airbase in Latakia, Assad may have also granted Iran its own naval military installation, according to a March report by the government-run Tass news agency. Iran announced last November it was considering establishing bases in Syria, Reuters reported.

Tehran is also believed to maintain a drone base not far from U.S. forces and their allies in al-Tanf, according to U.S. officials cited last month by NBC News. The alleged Iranian airstrip is reportedly the point of origin for unmanned aerial vehicles that the U.S. said breached its self-declared “deconfliction zone” surrounding its operations in al-Tanf, leading to airstrikes on pro-government forces.
