Evan Dorsey, 25, was believed to have killed Howard County Sheriff's Deputy Carl A. Koontz on Sunday. Koontz and Howard County Sheriff's Sgt. Jordan J. Buckley were serving Dorsey an arrest warrant when the shooting happened. An autopsy report showed Koontz was killed by a gunshot wound to the pelvis. Buckley survived his injuries and was released Monday from IU Health Methodist Hospital. UPDATE 2:36 PM MONDAY: Howard County Sheriff's Sgt. Jordan J. Buckley has been released from Methodist Hospital after being wounded in a shootout Sunday that killed a fellow sheriff's deputy. Buckley, 35, was wounded in the upper thigh while serving an arrest warrant, officials said. Howard County Deputy Carl A. Koontz, 27, was killed in the shooting. Indiana State Police officials say Buckley will participate in the procession to take Koontz's body home to Kokomo. UPDATE 11:11 AM MONDAY: Police have identified the suspect in the shooting that killed 27-year-old Howard County Deputy Carl A. Koontz as Evan Dorsey. During a news conference this morning, Howard County Sheriff Steven Rogers said Dorsey, 25, was wanted for failure to appear in court on a charge of possession of a syringe. Online court records indicate that Dorsey has prior convictions for drug possession. An autopsy scheduled for later today is expected to reveal more about how Dorsey died. Court records provide various addresses in several cities for Dorsey. Evan Dorsey (Photo: Provided by Howard County Sheriff's Department) Rogers also said that 35-year-old Sgt. Jordan J. Buckley is doing well in the hospital after being shot early Sunday. It is unclear when he will be released from the hospital. At the Koontz family's request, a moment of silence will be held at 11:10 a.m., Rogers said. Sgt. John Perrine said that time was chosen because it marks 24 hours from the time Koontz died. Counseling services have been made available for officers who need someone to talk to. "Part of the process today will be groups coming in ... to help those folks. It has affected the entire law enforcement agency here, but specifically those people who were directly involved," Rogers said. "We know that they need some special attention, and that will be provided for them." Rogers also assured the community that although they are grieving, they will continue to protect the community. Troopers from the Indiana State Police and other law enforcement officers are on hand to assist the Howard County Sheriff's Department. "There is a process that needs to happen for everybody individually that is affected by this terrible tragedy," Perrine said. "That process is going to take days, months, even years for some. So we're here to offer any kind of help that we can. We’ll be here for as long as they need us." Rogers said officials will meet with Koontz's family this morning to discuss plans for a memorial service. The body of Howard County Deputy Carl A. Koontz, is transported by law enforcement personnel, about 14 hours after he was shot serving a warrant in Russiaville, Sunday, March 20, 2016. Robert Scheer/IndyStar "You can only imagine the loss here ... a wife with a small child, so we're just trying to be as comforting as we can and help her through this process," Rogers said. "That’s basically it. We're trying to be there in every way we can for her." Rogers also took the time to thank everyone who has reached out to the department to offer help or a kind word. He said the list of supporters from across the country, and even outside the country, continues to grow. "We will try to get around to thanking all those people, but it’s a long list," he said. "They help us understand what we work for and that people do recognize what we do." In support of Koontz's wife, Cassie, and his 8-month old son, Noah, a GoFundMe page has been established by Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 78. In addition to making contributions online, donors can mail donations to the lodge at 102 W. Markland Ave., Kokomo. Howard County Sheriff's Deputy Carl A. Koontz with his wife, Kassie, and son, Noah. (Photo: Provided by Indiana State Police) As of Monday morning, the page had generated more than $29,200 for Koontz's family. Koontz is the first Indiana law enforcement officer to be killed this year, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. Nationwide, 26 officers have been killed in the line of duty this year. Fifteen of those officers have been killed by firearms.
