أعلنت وزارة الداخلية وفاة (76) شخصاً وإصابة (29) آخرين، وانهيار  (7109) منزلاً كلياً، بسبب الامطار التي ضربت أجزاء متفرقة من البلاد الأسبوع الماضي، منها (52) حالة غرق، و(8) وفيات إثر صعق كهربائي، و(16) بسبب انهيار مباني، وقال وزير الداخلية الفريق أول ركن عصمت عبد الرحمن، رئيس المجلس القومي للدفاع المدني، إن وزارته استعجلت وزير المالية بدرالدين محمود، من أجل تصديق الميزانيات المُجازة لمُجابهة الأمطار التي تسببت في سيول وفيضانات خاصة في ولايات شمال دارفور والجزيرة وكسلا، وأوضح أن مستوى نهر القاش انخفض خلال يوم أمس إلى ثلاثة أمتار، واستعرض لدى حديثه في جلسة الشؤون الاجتماعية بالبرلمان،

حجم الأضرار الكلية والجزئية التي لحقت بالمنازل في هذه الولايات، وقال عبدالرحمن، بأن الأمطار والسيول أحدثت خسائر وأضراراً كبيرة في الأنفس والممتلكات في (13) ولاية من ولايات السودان، وإن الوضع ما زال مقلقاً بسبب الآثار التي لم يتم احتواؤها، والتهديد الماثل مع توقعات بهطل مزيد من الأمطار بمعدلات عالية وارتفاع مناسيب النيل، وأشار الوزير إلى اجتماع مكونات المجلس القومي للدفاع المدني للوقوف على تطورات الوضع لاتخاذ التدابير اللازمة وتقديم الدعم العاجل للمتضررين. وقال الأمين العام للمجلس القومي للدفاع المدني، هاشم عبدالمجيد، إن توقعات الأرصاد الجوية تشير إلى معدلات كبيرة في الأمطار خلال الأيام المقبلة في جميع أقاليم البلاد، بجانب ارتفاع في مناسيب النيل مقارنة بالأعوام السابقة، وطالب رئيس لجنة الشؤون الاجتماعية محمد أحمد منصور الشايب، بتقوية وتحديث أجهزة الرصد والتنبؤ وأهمية تخصيص إدارة للإنذار المبكر لمجابهة الكوارث والتفكير الجاد لوجود مجموعة عمل متخصصة في المجال يسندها مخزون استراتيجي. وأكد وزير الصحة بحر إدريس أبوقردة، تكامل الجهود، مشيراً للتحديات التي تواجه الوزارة المتمثلة في مكافحة الملاريا والإصحاح البيئي، وأنه يحتاج لرؤية مستقبلية، وشدد على مراجعة الميزانيات المتعلقة بطوارئ الخريف.

Sudan floods kill 76, destroy thousands of houses

Floods and heavy rain in Sudan have killed 76 people and destroyed thousands of homes in recent days, the interior minister said on Thursday.

Ismat Abdelrahman said 13 of Sudan's 18 provinces had been affected by flooding.

The Nile is at its highest levels in more than a century, swollen by heavy rain in many parts of the East African country, according to the water and irrigation ministry.

Interior ministry statistics showed downpours and flooding had completely destroyed 3,206 houses, and damaged 3,048 others in the eastern province of Kassala, one of the worst hit areas.

Sudan suffers from an underdeveloped infrastructure, particularly in rural areas, which makes it harder to cope with heavy rain and natural disasters.

Sudan: Eastern Sudan Families Missing After Floods

Dozens of families are still missing in Kassala in eastern Sudan after the flooding of El Gash River during the past week. In a continuous stream of reports about damage to infrastructure, a dam in North Darfur has nearly succumbed to the excessive rains.

About 45 families from Aroma locality, northwest of Kassala town, have gone missing. Meanwhile the Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS) has deployed a convoy of in-kind assistance to the residents of Hameshkoreib locality, also struck by the floods of the annual rainy season.

Seedi Dushka works for the national aid organisation. He reported to Radio Dabanga that the SRCS is the only party to have arrived in the affected areas in Hameshkoreib through Port Sudan.

"The conditions of the displaced residents and other residents are miserable. The water has washed away all their possessions and livestock. Now they live in the open without shelter."

Flash floods have washed away the dam that connected Hameshkoreib with Kassala on Sunday. A Sheikh in the area reported that residents fled to the surrounding mountains. Other reports state that more than 835 houses in Hameshkoreib are destroyed and over 700 damaged. The road to Port Sudan reportedly remains cut-off.

In Aroma, the number of deaths and missing people can so far not be defined. "No one has access to the villages flooded by the river in Aroma," the leader of the National Umma Party in Kassala said yesterday.

North Darfur dam

Heavy rains in North Darfur have caused severe damage to Khazan Tahan in Dar El Salam locality, along with significant damage to Khazan El Sareif dam. Kamal Abushouk, the State Minister of Urban Planning, told reporters on Monday that a team intervened to rescue another team that went to Khazan El Sareif dam to assess the situation.

Abushouk added that the heavy rains and flash floods have caused damage to infrastructure in Mellit and El Malha localities. "So far reportedly 88 families have been affected, including 72 families from Rwanda camp for displaced people, 13 families from El Dubo El Naira, and three families from Argo."

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported in its latest weekly bulletin that an estimated 42,850 people have been affected so far, according to the SRCS and the Sudanese government. About 8,570 houses have been damaged, of which 4,308 were completely destroyed.

In Khartoum, the Ministry of Water Resources Irrigation and Electricity has called on the residents of the states of Khartoum, the River Nile and Northern states to take the necessary precautionary measures to protect lives and property amidst the rising of the Nile, from El Mogran station to Dongola.

Sudan – Floods in 3 States Leave Several Dead and Hundreds Homeless

Heavy rain and flash floods have been reported in several states in Sudan over the last week, causing several fatalities and destroying hundreds of homes. Many of the victims died as a result of collapsed buildings.

At least 9 people died in flash floods in El-Fasher, capital of North Darfur, Sudan, on 15 July, 2016, according to the SUNA news agency.

SUNA report that two of the victims are believed to be from camps for internally displaced. Radio Dabanga say the number is higher. They report that five residents of the Abu Shouk camp for the displaced, northeast of El Fasher, were killed by floods that came from the Jadid El Seil valley.

Radio Dabanga add that flash floods streaming from the Tagali and Magali mountains damaging hundreds of homes in camp Naivasha in Shangil Tobaya, North Darfur, during the morning of Wednesday 13 July 2016. Dozens of families have been left homeless.

Khartoum and Al Jazirah States

According to Radio Dabanga, other areas of the country have also been affected. Heavy rain on 14 July caused buildings to collapse in Omdurman, Khartoum State, leaving five people dead and at least 40 homes severely damaged. Several areas of the city of Khartoum have also seen some flooding. Radio Dabanga also report that two people died after heavy rain resulted in a house collapse in Al Jazirah State.
