SOHR, February 7, 2015

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) has documented death of 210,060 persons since 18/03/2011, which witnessed the fall of the first martyr in Daraa, until 05/02/2015.

The casualties are as follows:

Civilians: 100,973 civilians, including 10,664 children and 6,783 women.

Rebel and Islamic fighters: 35,827

Defected soldiers and officers: 2,498

Arab, European, Asian, American and Australian fighters from the ISIS, al-Nusra Front, Junoud al-Sham battalion, Jund Al-Aqsa battalion, Jund al-Sham Movement and al-Khadra’ battalion: 24,989

Regular regime soldiers and officers: 45,385

Combatants from Popular Defense Committees, National Defense Forces, al Shabiha, pro-regime informers and the “Syrian resistance to liberate the Sanjak of Alexandretta”: 29,943

Pro- regime Shia militiamen from Arab and Asian nationalities, Al Quds Al Felastini Brigade and other pro-regime militiamen from different Arab nationalities: 2502

Fighters from Hezbollah: 640

Unidentified dead people (documented by photos and footages): 3,130

It is worth noting that the numbers do not include more than 20,000 detainees in regime prisons and thousands of those who disappeared during regime raids and massacres. It does not include more than 7,000 regular soldiers and pro-regime militants and hundreds of “regime supporters” captured by IS, Islamic fighters, Al-Nusra front, rebel and Islamic battalions on charge of “dealing with the regime”.

The numbers also do not include more than 1,500 fighters from the YPG, IS, al-Nusra Front, Islamic battalions and rebel battalions who were kidnapped during clashes among the mentioned parties. These statistics do not include the destiny of 4,000 abductees from the civilians and fighters inside IS jails from Shaitaat tribe who were kidnapped by the Islamic State in the province of Deir Ezzor.

We in the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimates the real number of non-Syrian casualties from the IS, al-Nusra Front, Islamic factions, Jund Al-Aqsa battalion, Junoud al-Sham, al-Katiba al-Khadra’, Jund al-Sham, rebel battalions, regular forces and pro-regime militants to be approximately 85,000 more than the documented number due to the extreme discretion by all sides on the human losses caused by the conflict, the difficulty of communication in Syria, and the difficulties to know identify the fate of 40,000 detainees .

Over 1.5 million Syrian civilians were seriously wounded or suffered from permanent disabilities, More than half of the Syrian people have been displaced, in addition to destroying the infrastructure of the country and the public and private properties during the past 47 months

Despite our loss of hope in an international community capable and willing to put an end to the ongoing atrocities in Syria, we in the Syrian Observatory call upon all sides that claim to defend the freedoms of the people and their rights, to take a serious and responsible stance in order to end the bloodshed in Syria amid the increasing violence and the escalating number of casualties.

SOHR calls upon   the UN Security Council to move immediately and urgently  to stop the systematic killing in cold blood committed against Syrians, as well as to stop to displace our people who has still dreamed about disposal of injustice and darkness in order to reach to establish the state of democracy, freedom, justice and equality. We ask the members of the Security Council, is it not enough for you death and injure of about 2 million as well as displacing millions of Syrian people to make you move in order to stop the criminals from committing more and more crimes against the Syrians and to transfer the file of war crimes and crimes against humanity to the International Criminal Court?!.

It is worth to mention that we in the Syrian Observatory have refused many times to provide an international organization with our statistics of casualties in Syria since the beginning of the Syrian Revolution because we consider that the role of this organization is to work with the international community to transfer the file of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Syria to the competent international courts, and to promote the culture of democracy and human rights; its role not to publish the number of people who die in Syria, depending on opposition and pro- Syrian regime parties that disseminate statistics according to their political orientation or as their supporters request, before it verifies the credibility of such statistics and figures presented by such parties that could be fake. In addition to, the role of this organization is not to disseminate the reports without documenting the information of these reports and reaching to correct conclusions that could be reliable for the international judicial organizations, which are able to activate the mechanism of international criminal prosecution.

Statement on the Death Toll of the Indiscriminate Killing Campaign in Douma City

SNN, February 12, 2015

Government forces killed no less than 121 victims in Douma city alone since the beginning of the indiscriminate killing campaign on 5 February. The victims are divided as follows: Civilians: 101 victims including 19 children and 20 women Rebels: 20 rebels These statistics indicate that there is a systematic policy to kill civilians as the percentage of civilian victims amounted to 83% of the total number of victims while the percentage of rebel victims is 17%.. Also, the percentage of women and children victims is 32% which is a notably high percentage that is unprecedented even in World War II.

The crime of extrajudicial killing can be classified as a crime against humanity, and most of the crimes deliberately targeted civilian residents. SNHR urges Mr. de Mistura to visit, along with an investigation team, Eastern Ghouta, which is only 10 minutes away from the capital Damascus, to see the catastrophes which the barbarian attacks and siege have caused

Bashar al-Assad's Barrel Bombs In Douma, Attacks In Ghouta Kill Nearly 200 This Week

SNN, February 10, 2015

Syrian regime forces hit Douma with heavy bombing, using suspected barrel bombs, from Monday night to Tuesday, killing at least 18 people in the capital of rebel-held Eastern Ghouta province. But the bombing was just the latest blow in the brutal campaign the regime has been carrying out in the Damascus countryside for the past week, human rights activists said.

Roughly 178 civilians were killed in the province from Feb. 5-9, the day before the suspected barrel bomb attack in Douma. In one attack on Thursday, regime forces hit a busy market in Kafr Batna city, killing 39 civilians. The next day, the regime launched more than 60 rockets at a residential neighborhood in Douma, killing 28 civilians, according to a report from the Syrian Network for Human Rights.

SNHR is an independent human rights monitoring group that relies on a widespread network of independent human rights advocates, field hospital workers and media activists sprinkled around the country, often operating in secret, to compile primary sources when an attack occurs. For this particular report, the group obtained more than 35 videos and 50 photographs of attacks in Eastern Ghouta.

Regime forces claimed the bombing was a response to rebel groups in the area firing at least 10 rockets toward Damascus. SNHR’s report found “there was no rebel present or any military centers or gatherings in the areas that were targeted by regime forces.” Roughly 80 percent of those killed in Eastern Ghouta this week were civilians and at least 29 were children, according to SNHR.

Dozens of amateur videos, including some released by the Islamic State group, showed civilians in Douma on Tuesday combing through the charred remains of buildings, covered in ash, for survivors. Photos showed dozens of dead children and entire families stuck under piles of rubble. By Tuesday morning, some buildings were still on fire, so the death toll was expected to rise as bodies are pulled out of the rubble.

That morning, BBC broadcast an interview President Bashar Assad in Damascus in which he giggled at the mention of his use of barrel bombs, calling them a “childish story.” The Syrian regime has bombs, he said, but not barrels.

A barrel bomb is an explosive device made from a metal container filled with nails and shrapnel. Human rights organizations have accused the Assad regime of using the devices countless times, despite a United Nations resolution that prohibits them from being used in highly populated areas.

“Assad has been getting away with mass crimes for several years. The international fight against the extremist group Islamic State (also known as ISIS) that consumes Western powers has provided him with a much welcome distraction, allowing him to continue the killing unbothered,” Human Rights Watch's United Nations director said in a statement that fervently condemned the regime’s continued use of barrel bombs in Syria. “So Assad can go on and have fun with barrel bombs while Syrians die.”

Scores dead in intensified fighting in southern Syria: monitor

BEIRUT Sun Feb 15, 2015 6:06am EST

(Reuters) -

Intense clashes in southern Syria have killed scores of pro-government and insurgent fighters in the past week, a group monitoring Syria's war said on Sunday, forecasting even fiercer violence as the weather clears.

Syria's army and allied combatants from Lebanon's Hezbollah launched a large-scale offensive in the region last week against insurgent groups including al Qaeda's Syria wing Nusra Front and non-jihadist rebels.

The battle is significant because it is one of the last areas where mainstream rebels opposing President Bashar al-Assad have a foothold. Such groups have lost ground to hardline Islamist militants in the four-year conflict.

More than 50 rebels have been killed in the fighting, the head of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. Rami Abdulrahman said 43 members of the Syrian army and allied groups had also died, including 12 officers.

"Now the weather is better there will be Syrian air strikes. With the air strikes they will move forward," he said.

Abdulrahman, who tracks the war using sources on the ground, said around 5,000 pro-government troops were taking part in the offensive which aims to take a triangle of rebel-held land from rural areas southwest of Damascus to Deraa city to Quneitra.

Sources on both sides of the battlefront have said the offensive aims to shield Damascus, the capital a short drive to the north. The insurgents had made significant gains in the south in recent months, taking several army bases.

Syrian state media and Hezbollah's al-Manar channel reported on the battles in the south during the week, saying the army had been reclaiming territory from "terrorists". State media said a number of enemy fighters had been killed. Syrian officials were not immediately available for comment on Sunday.

"The situation remains hit-and-run between us and regime forces," said Abu Gaiath, spokesman for the rebel Alwiyat Seif al-Sham group. Its fighters are part of the "Southern Front" rebel alliance that has had support from states opposed to Assad.

Speaking via the Internet from inside Syria, he said fighting had calmed in the past two days but the military was aiming to encircle a village northeast of Quneitra and had captured towns and villages south of Damascus.

The Observatory's Abdulrahman said 10 fighters on the government side had been executed after being accused of passing information to the enemy. He also said Nusra Front fighters had been killed in battles but exact numbers were not known.

Winter weather had limited fighting in the past few days and prevented air strikes, one of the army's most potent weapons against insurgents. Abdulrahman said the army and allied groups planned to involve 10,000 fighters in the offensive.
