International conference on Jerusalem to open in Doha on Sunday

An international conference on Jerusalem is to open in the Qatari capital, Doha on Sunday morning under the patronage of the Arab League to boost steadfastness of the holy city and its inhabitants.

The three-day conference would discuss a number of axes including history of Jerusalem, the city’s status in the international law, and the Israeli attempts to forge the holy city’s history.

The conferees would also tackle details of the Israeli violations of the city such as attacking its holy shrines, distorting its heritage, and desecrating its graveyards in addition to the impact of the Israeli policies on health and education in the city.

Speeches would focus on what is needed to help the city and to protect it and the Aqsa mosque in light of the Jewish settlers’ incessant attacks and the Israeli Judaization efforts.

The Jerusalem International Conference is scheduled to kick off in Doha, the capital of Qatar, on Sunday under the patronage of the Arab League.

The three-day conference comes to show solidarity with the holy city in the face of Israeli threats, and it was approved during the 22nd Arab League Summit in Sirt, Libya in March 2010.

The conference is set to address several issues related to the holy city of Jerusalem including the legal status of the city as understood in international law, as well as a historic review.

The participants will also tackle Israel’s plans to “forge” the history of the holy city in addition to what they termed as ongoing violations of human rights committed against the Palestinian population, historic sites, cemeteries and Islamic heritage.

President Mahmoud Abbas is scheduled to deliver a speech during the conference where he will discuss Israeli practices and the challenges faced by Palestinian residents of Jerusalem on a daily basis.

The Moroccan foreign minister will also deliver a speech on behalf of its king, Muhammad VI, who heads the Arab League’s Jerusalem Committee. League secretary Nabil al-Arabi will also address the conference.

Among the speakers is the secretary-general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Akmal Addin Ihsan Oglo and secretary-general of the Cooperation Council of the Arab Gulf States Abdul-Latif Zayani.

On behalf of the secretary-general of the UN, Ban Ki-moon, the UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, Robert Serry, will also deliver a speech at the conference.

Speakers are expected to focus on the needed procedures to protect Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque in light of the ongoing assaults by Israeli rightists and "Judaisation" efforts by the Israeli government.
