Lahore bombings death toll hits 37

The death toll from a triple bombing at a Shia Muslim gathering in eastern Pakistani city of Lahore has risen to 37 after many passed away in various hospitals.

Earlier reports said at least 28 people were killed after three bombs went off in quick succession during a crowded mourning procession in the Karbala Gamay Shah district of Lahore on Wednesday.

Medics said on Thursday that at least nine people succumbed to their injuries overnight at hospitals across the city, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Nearly 300 have wounded as attacks sent shock waves through the district.

The attacks came as Shia Muslims were marking the martyrdom of the first Shia Imam, Ali Ibn-Abi Taleb (PBUH).

President Asif Ali Zardari has condemned the bombings as a cowardly act of terrorism.

The death toll is expected to rise as some of the injured are said to be in critical condition.

Lahore has seen several bomb attacks over the past couple of years.

Pro-Taliban groups have launched a violent campaign against Shia Muslims, and they are stretching the terror campaign toward the so-called stable areas of Pakistan as well.

Several Shia religious gatherings have been targeted in the central province of Punjab over the past few months.

Since the 1980s, thousands of people have been killed in sectarian-related incidents in Pakistan.
