'11 US-led troops killed in Afghanistan'

US-led soldiers in Afghanistan, file photo Taliban claim that they have killed at least 11 US-led soldiers in a bomb attack in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi claimed on Saturday that one of Taliban members blew himself up at a joint military base controlled by US-led foreign troops and Afghan forces and killed 11 soldiers and wounded several others, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Helmand Police Chief Asadullah Sherzad, however, rejected the claim, saying "only one Afghan policeman was killed" after the attacker blew himself up while security forces tried to arrest him in the front of the military base in Khanshin district.

NATO's International Security Assistance Force have not yet commented on the Friday incident.

This year has been the deadliest for the Western military alliance in Afghanistan with over 580 fatalities reported so far.

Western public opinion is growing increasingly tired of the war. Deaths of civilians in NATO and the US unauthorized attacks have also fueled tensions between Afghanistan and Western countries.

In another incident, a tribal leader was assassinated in the province by unknown armed men on Saturday.

Around 500 tribal leaders have been murdered in Kandahar alone since the start of the US-led invasion back in 2001.

Security remains fragile in the country despite the presence of some 150,000 foreign troops.

Swedish soldier dies in Afghanistan

A Swedish soldier died in northern Afghanistan and two others were wounded on Saturday when their vehicle ran over an improvised explosive device, a Swedish military communique said.

The vehicle had been called in after clashes west of Mazar-i-Sharif.

The wounds to the two other soldiers were not in life-threatening, the statement said.

Some 500 Swedish troops are currently posted in northern Afghanistan serving in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

Swedish troops were sent to the country in early 2002, even though Sweden is officially neutral and not a member of NATO.

According to the armed forces five Swedish troops have died in Afghanistan since that date.

A series of blasts also killed at least two civilians and wounded several others in Afghanistan's main southern city of Kandahar, the scene of several recent deadly attacks on police.

Helicopters patrolled above the city as NATO and Afghan troops were deployed to seal off the attack sites. Ambulances with sirens wailing ferried victims to local hospitals.

In one attack, a motorised rickshaw carrying explosives was detonated behind police headquarters in the centre of the city, said Zelmai Ayubi, spokesman for the governor of Kandahar province. One bystander was killed and three others wounded, Ayubi said.

On the eastern side of the city, (Taliban fighters) attacked an oil tanker with gunfire, causing it to explode. One civilian was killed and at least two others were wounded.

A rocket fired by (Taliban fighters) slammed into a prison compound in the city's west, police said. No casualties were immediately reported. Another explosion went off in the city's business district, also in the west. Details were not immediately available.

Kandahar city has been a target for (Taliban fighters) this month. Two explosions killed nine people and wounded two dozen others on October 6. Three blasts just minutes apart killed three Afghan police officers in the city on October 5.
