Abbas Says Israelis Canceled the Oslo Accords and All Agreements with Palestinians, Seeks UN Imposed Solution

Abbas proposes int’l mandate from UN on territories after failed talks

[ 11/10/2010 - 06:29 PM ]

AMMAN, (PIC)--

Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said that Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, meeting with Arab leaders in the Sirt, Libya, Arab League Summit, proposed the idea of seeking an imposed international mandate from the UN on 1967 occupied Palestinian territories as an alternative for the failed negotiations with Israel.

De facto Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas admitted to officials that there was no point in the Palestinian Authority’s existence after Israel abolished the Oslo Agreements and withdrew the PA’s jurisdiction over Palestinian lands.

The Agence France-Presse on Monday quoted Erekat as saying in the Jordanian capital of Amman: “Abbas assured the Arabs during the summit that Israel has actually cancelled the Oslo agreement and the rest of the agreements signed with the Palestine Liberation Organization.”

“Abbas also confirmed that in addition to Israel’s cancellation of the agreements signed with us, it also completely revoked the Palestinian political, legal, and security jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority over Palestinian territories,” Erekat added.

President Mahmoud Abbas will continue on as leader of the Palestinian Authority, the secretary-general of the president's office said Monday.

Abdul Rahim said reports of Abbas' resignation and the dismantling of the PA were "all rumors to lower the spirits of the Palestinians," as he received the Tunisian representative to the PA Shakib Al-Thawadi at the presentational compound in Ramallah, central West Bank.

Reports surfaced last week as Abbas met with the Arab Follow-Up Committee was delayed, when officials suggested that the president would resign if talks with Israel failed.

Speaking before Arab foreign ministers on Friday, Abbas called into question the need for “the Palestinian Authority's continued existence if the efforts to establish an independent Palestinian state fail.”

Abdul Rahim said the meeting with Al-Thawadi focused on the latest political developments and the settlement obstacle in direct negotiations, which the Arab League said it would give one more month before withdrawing its endorsement.
