Two policemen were shot dead by gunmen fire in a souk (outdoor market) in central Mosul city on Sunday, a Ninewa police source said.

“Unidentified gunmen traced two policemen in uniform and on duty in Bab al-Saray souk, central Mosul, and opened fire on them inside a store, killing them instantly,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Mosul, the capital city of the violence-scarred province of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Woman shot down by gunmen in Mosul

A young woman was shot dead by gunmen in a souk (outdoor market) in western Mosul city on Sunday, according to a local security source.

“Unidentified gunmen inside a vehicle opened fire on an 18-year-old woman in al-Ma’ash souk, western Mosul, killing her instantly, and escaped to an unknown place,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He did not give more information about the incident.

Mosul, the capital city of the volatile province of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Officer down in a blast in Kirkuk

One Iraqi officer was wounded when a roadside bomb hit an Iraqi army patrol south of Kirkuk city.

“The incident occurred late Saturday night near the Zeglawa village, around 35 km south of Kirkuk,” a local security source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency on Sunday.

He noted that the injured officer is a captain.

“The officer was admitted to hospital,” the source pointed out.

He explained that an investigation is underway to reveal sides that launched the attack.

The oil-rich city of Kirkuk lies 250 km northeast of Baghdad.

CBI blast leaves 15 civilians, 3 gunmen killed

Fifteen civilians and three terrorists were killed in an armed attack on the Central Bank of Iraq (CBI) in Baghdad on Sunday, according to the spokesman for the Baghdad Operations Command.

“The assault left 15 local residents and three terrorists killed,” BOC spokesman Maj. General Qassem Atta was quoted by al-Iraqiya TV.

Atta had told Aswat al-Iraq news agency that security forces were closing in on the group of gunmen that detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) off the CBI entrance in central Baghdad.

Earlier, security sources said civilians were killed or wounded in a blast from an IED between the areas of al-Souk al-Arabi and the CBI.

Iraq Central Bank attack claims 15 lives

Bombers and gunmen wearing military uniforms killed 15 people and took hostages on Sunday in a daring raid on the Iraq Central Bank in Baghdad, triggering an ongoing siege with security forces.

The violence began at around 2:50 pm (1150 GMT) when an attacker wearing an army captain's uniform detonated his payload near the building, causing multiple casualties, a high-ranking defense ministry official said.

The attackers took control of the building as a total of eight explosions sounded throughout the area in less than an hour amid exchanges of gunfire and as army helicopters circled overhead.

The gunmen were continuing to occupy the building and the attackers had posted snipers on the roof of the bank in an attempt to deter police and soldiers from wrestling back control, according to the defense official.

Most of those killed were bank workers, with a further 43 people wounded, and many other employees are being held captive inside, said an interior ministry official who gave the toll.

Major General Qassim Atta, a spokesman for the security forces in Baghdad, said soldiers and police were "besieging" the attackers whom he described as "a terrorist group."

He said it was unclear if they had intended to rob the bank, target its employees and take hostages, or destroy the building.

Government figures showed that 337 people were killed in violence across Iraq in May, the fourth time this year that the overall death toll has been higher when compared with the same month of 2009.

The audacious attack came one day before the reopening of the conflict-torn nation's parliament, the country's second democratic grouping since the US-led invasion that ousted dictator Saddam Hussein in 2003.
