Car bomb explosion kills 28 in Iraq

At least 28 people have been killed and 46 others have been wounded in a car bomb explosion in the central Iraqi city of Ba'aqouba.

The explosion occurred near a mosque in the predominantly Shia neighborhood of Abu Sayeeda on Wednesday.

The strong blast also caused a building to collapse. Some reports, however, say that the explosion occurred near a crowded market.

Police officials say women and children are among the victims of the explosion, adding that the casualties are expected to rise.

Police have cordoned off the area, arguing that more bombs could be planted in the area.

Wednesday's blast is the latest in a series of deadly attacks in Ba'aqouba in recent days. Seven people were killed and 21 others were wounded on Monday after a car bomb exploded in front of a coffee shop in the Iraqi city.

Seven people were also wounded in a bomb blast in Jadidat al-Shat district west of Ba'aqouba.

Analysts have warned that violence in the country may see a surge if the negotiations on forming a new coalition government continue to drag on.

The Iraqi government has been in limbo for more than four months since general elections were held. No single block has won an overall parliamentary majority. The two lists which won the most seats are still undecided on who the next Iraqi prime minister should be.

Army officer, 2 cops wounded in Mosul

An army officer and two policemen were wounded in two separate incidents in Mosul on Wednesday, a security source said.

“A bomb, stuck to the vehicle of Colonel Aziz Soliman of the 3rd division of the Iraqi army, went off in al-Makouk village in al-Qayara district, south of Mosul, injuring him,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“An improvised explosive device went off on Wednesday (July 21) targeting S.W.A.T vehicle patrol in al-Yarmouk region in western Mosul, injuring two policemen,” he added, without giving more details.

Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

6 killed, 14 wounded in Ba'aquba explosion

At least six persons were killed and 14 others were wounded in the car bomb explosion that rattled eastern Ba'aquba on Wednesday, a police source said.

“The explosion that took place in Abi Seida district, eastern Ba'aquba, killed six people and injured 14,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

A police source had said earlier that the blast near Abi Seida mosque left an unspecified number of casualties, and caused the collapse of a residential building.

Ba'aquba, the capital of Diala, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

Civilian killed in central Falluja

One civilian was killed on Wednesday when unknown gunmen targeted his house in central Falluja city.

“Unidentified gunmen used roadside bombs to attack a citizen’s house in the al-Golan neighborhood, central Falluja,” a local security source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He noted that the civilian died instantly, while his house was heavily damaged.

“Nearby houses were also damaged,” the source added.

Falluja, the biggest city of al-Anbar province, lies 45 km west of Baghdad.

1 killed, 7 injured in 3 blasts in Baghdad

One person was killed on Wednesday and seven others wounded in three blasts in Baghdad.

“A roadside bomb went off today targeting a police patrol in the al-Daura neighborhood, southern Baghdad, wounding two policemen and devastating their vehicle,” a local security source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“A roadside bomb went off today in Palestine Street, eastern Baghdad, wounding two civilians and damaging a number of nearby shops,” the source added.

“A sticky bomb attached to a civilian vehicle went off today in the al-Amiriya neighborhood, western Baghdad, killing one person and wounding three others,” the source proceeded.

3 injured in blast in Kirkuk

Three persons were wounded on Wednesday when a roadside bomb went off west of Kirkuk city.

“The bomb targeted a civilian vehicle near the Bajwan village, 15 km west of Kirkuk city,” a local police source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He noted that the blast devastated the car, and wounded the three persons inside it.

“Two women are among the injuries who have been all admitted to hospital,” the source added.

He pointed out that an investigation is underway to learn more about the blast.

The oil-rich city of Kirkuk lies 250 km northeast of Baghdad.

Gunman killed while planting bomb northern Mosul

A gunman was killed on Tuesday when the bomb he was planting went off in northern Mosul, a security source said.

“The gunman was planting a bomb on a road in al-Shurta neighborhood in northern Mosul, when it exploded suddenly, killing him instantly,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Mosul, the capital of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.
