An improvised explosive device (IED) went off inside a bus in northeastern al-Diwaniya province, leaving one person killed and three others wounded, according to a local medic on Sunday.

“One killed man and three wounded persons have been registered in Diwaniya public hospital after the blast that ripped through the district of al-Daghara,” an official in the Diwaniya health department told Aswat al-Iraq news agency on customary condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile, Maj. General Abdulaziz al-Salhi, the director of al-Diwaniya police department, told Aswat al-Iraq that an IED placed inside a box on a mini-bus went off on Sunday afternoon in the heart of al-Daghara outdoor souk (market), 15 km northeastern Diwaniya, leaving the bus driver and two pedestrians severely wounded.

Diwaniya, the capital city of the province of al-Diwaniya, lies 180 km south of Baghdad.

Female candidate assassinated in Mosul

Two gunmen shot dead a woman running in the country’s parliamentary elections on the list of the al-Iraqiya Coalition west of Mosul city on Sunday, a local security source said.

“Two unidentified gunmen opened fire, using their guns with silencers attached, on Dr. Soha Abdullah Jarallah, a woman running on the al-Iraqiya Coalition list, in the area of Raas al-Jada, western Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The candidate’s relative was also wounded in the attack,” the source added.

He said that Dr. Jarallah was a vet residing in Baghdad. “She came to Mosul on her canvassing campaign. As soon as she went out of the house of one of her relatives, where she was invited over lunch, two gunmen emerged and shot her down,” he added.

The al-Iraqiya is a coalition of lists and blocs, most prominent of which is the bloc led by former Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, Saleh al-Motalk’s National Dialogue Front as well as the blocs of Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi, Deputy Prime Minister Rafie al-Issawi and lawmaker Dhafer al-Aani among others.

3 Iraqi servicemen wounded in blast in Baaquba

DIALA / Aswat al-Iraq:

Three Iraqi soldiers have been injured in an explosive charge blast in Baaquba City, a local police source said on Sunday.

“On Sunday, an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated on the road linking al-Saadiya district to Jalawlaa (northeastern Baaquba), while an Iraqi army patrol vehicle was passing the location, wounding three patrolmen,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. One of those wounded is in a critical condition, the source noted. Police forces arrived at the scene of the blast and defused a second explosive charge, the source added.

Baaquba, the capital city of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.

2 killed in separate incidents in Mosul

Unknown gunmen killed two persons, including an Egyptian, in two separate incidents in Mosul City, a local police source said on Saturday.

“This evening, unidentified gunmen broke into the office of the mayor of al-Darkazliya, eastern Mosul, Younis Ibrahim, and opened fire on him, killing him on the spot,” the source, who requested to remain unnamed, told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “Other gunmen killed an Egyptian who works in a popular café in Bab al-Toub area, downtown Mosul,” the source added.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

7 killed, 2 wounded in clashes between gunmen, guards in Mosul

Seven persons were killed and two others were injured during clashes that erupted between gunmen and civil guards in western Mosul, a local police source said on Saturday.

“This afternoon, unknown gunmen attacked civil guards working for a service project in Tal Ata district, western Mosul,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The clashes left six gunmen and one guard killed, and two guards wounded, the source noted.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

Police chief survives assassination attempt

KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq:

A police director in Kirkuk has survived an attempt on his life when an explosive device hit his vehicle in the southwest of the city, a local security source said on Saturday.

“Today, the director of al-Mahooz police station, Huweija district (65 km southwest of Kirkuk), Maj. Monthir Jassem, survived an assassination attempt when an explosive device targeted his car on the main road linking Kirkuk to the district,” Brig. Sarhad Qader told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The blast caused damage to the car and injured one of his security personnel, the official pointed out.

Kirkuk, an oil-rich and mixed city of Kurds, Turkmen, Christians and Arabs, lies 250 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

2 cops killed by gunmen in Ninewa checkpoint

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq:

 Two policemen were killed by unidentified gunmen at a checkpoint in southern Ninewa province on Friday, a local police source said.

“Unidentified gunmen opened fire at soldiers in a checkpoint in the Hadar district, south of Mosul, leaving two of them killed,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The two dead policemen were working in the oil pipeline protection department,” he added, not giving further details.

Mosul, the capital city of the volatile province of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.
