Somalia violence kills 11 civilians

A fresh outbreak of fighting between the al-Shabab fighters and Somali government forces has left at least 11 civilians dead in the country's capital city, Mogadishu.

More than 30 other civilians were injured after the fighting broke out near the presidential palace in Mogadishu on Saturday, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Witnesses said the civilians were fatally shot in the area as they tried to flee the scene of the battle.

Al-Shabab has been trying to cut off the only road that leads to the presidential palace for over a week now.

More than 80 civilians have been killed in the area since Monday.

Al-Shabab claims that the government troops are losing territory in the capital where the area under the interim government's control has already shrunk to a few blocks.

Somalia has not had a functioning government since warlords overthrew former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991.

The Somali government has struggled for years to restore security, but efforts have not yet yielded results in the Horn of Africa country.

Heavy fighting between the troops of the transitional government of Somalia backing by the African Union troops AMISOM and allied fighters of Hizbul Islam and Al-shabab has broken out in parts of Hodan district in the Somali capital Mogadishu for the 6th consecutive day.

Most of the clashes continued between Dabka and Bakara intersections in Hodan district where both Ahlu Sunna Waljama’a clerics and the transitional government forces with AMISOM and Al-shabab forces that exchanged heavy gunfire which had affected parts of Bakara market in the capital, killing 20, wounding 30 others.

Most of the people died and wounded in parts of Hodan and Hawl-wadag districts in the capital according to the emergency traffic officials adding that there were more mortars using both sides.

There had been more civilians displacing from their house in several districts as Bondere, Shibis and Abdal Aziz for fears of the clashes between Al-shabab and government soldiers.

More displacing women with their children could be seen fleeing from clashes and mortars at the bus stations of Hamarweyne district in Mogadishu.

There were many more other areas affecting the shelling as Heliwa, Towfiq and Bakara and the heavy weapons of both sides according to the emergency traffic officials and witnesses.

The transitional government of Somalia had issued a press release on Thursday an said that it killed 25 Al-shabab fighters including high officers in the recent clashes continued in the capital for over the past days.

TFG Security Forces working with AMISOM to contain Alshabaab offensive (Mogadishu-Somalia-August 26th, 2010) Anticipation and planning is enabling TFG security forces, supported by AMISOM forces, to contain the latest Alshabaab offensive against the Somali people, launched by the extremist group last Monday.

In the last three days it is reliable estimates account for more than 25 Alshabaab militias dead, including Abdulahi Mortar, an extremist military and tactical leader who executed numerous mortar attacks on civilians in the city. Over 70 Alshabaab (fighters) were wounded in yesterday's fighting alone.

However, fighting has also resulted in the regrettable death of an estimated 70 innocent civilians, and the wounding of around 200 others. Hospital procedures are coping well. Wounded people are receiving treatment and some medevac is also taking place for the most seriously injured.

The Minister of Information said:

"All our preparations mean that Al-Shabab are left with ever more desperate options. The city will remain on high alert. We know where they are targeting and we are doing everything we can, with outstanding support from AMISOM, to contain the threat. Without the necessary forces, Al-Shabab may still get through to murder innocent people, so we need the citizens of the Mogadishu to remain vigilant.

"Somali President Sh Shariif Sh Ahmed offered a ceasefire to allow decent citizens to celebrate the holy month of Ramadan in peace, but the defiant Alshabaab (fighters) have failed to respect this offer and are wholly responsible for the fighting around the city. But escalating violence during Ramadan simply reinforces what we already knew.
