Nearly 30 Taliban killed in north, Afghan provincial governor says

Three pro-government militia troops and 29 alleged Taliban fighters were killed in a series of clashes in northern Afghanistan, a provincial governor said Saturday.

Afghan soldiers and US special forces clashed with a group of Taliban fighters in Archi district of Kunduz province on Friday night, killing 14 alleged Taliban fighters, Governor Mohammad Omar said.

Four suspects were detained by the combined forces, he said. Four other Taliban fighters and three pro-government militia forces were killed in combat in the Emam Saheb district on Friday, he added.

Nine other Taliban fighters were killed, including commander Mullah Selab and a Pakistani fighter, and more than a dozen others were injured in Chardarah district and Khewaja Ghar area, he said.

Taliban resistance to NATO occupation forces is on the rise in the northern region, which has been relatively peaceful until about three years ago compared to the southern and eastern provinces, the Taliban's main power base.

Taliban fighters have now turned several districts in Kunduz and neighbouring Baghlan province into their main hub of activity in the north.

Seven German troops were killed and more than a dozen were injured in the past month in the two provinces. Around 4,500 German soldiers are stationed in the northern region, while 500 additional forces are expected to arrive in there in the coming months.

Omar said 1,200 extra US troops are expected to be deployed to Chardarah and Archi, the most volatile districts in Kunduz, where they are expected to build a new military base in May. He said 3,000 more US forces would arrive in the northern province of Balkh in summer.

With the deployment of additional NATO forces, a major offensive is planned in Kunduz and Baghlan provinces, the first large operation against Taliban fighters in the north since the Taliban government's ouster in late 2001.

Currently there are more than 125,000 NATO troops in the country, and the total is set to rise to 150,000 by mid-year. Copyright DPA

20 Afghani and Foreign Soldiers Killed and a Military Commander Captured in Paktika

Paktika, April 24,

Mujahideen of the Islamic Emirate in Paktika province ambushed a joint military convoy of foreign and internal Afghan troops on the main road in Pir Kutti Area, Urgon district,.  According to the local Mujahideen, the armed confrontation continued for three hours in which Mujahideen killed 20 foreign and internal Afghan troops and captured Norullah,   a commander of the border police force. Similarly,   several invading and Afghan  surrogate soldiers were injured.

The report adds, Mujahideen captured a military tank, one motorcycle,  various types of ammunitions and weapons left by  the soldiers. 2 Mujahideens are reported to have been wounded during  the armed  encounter.   According to the Mujahideen, the captured commander has been taken to a safe haven.

Five Romanian soldiers killed in Zabul province

A blast in Zabul's provincial capital, the city of Kalat killed at leas five Romanian soldiers Saturday(April 24) when it detonated under their tank traveling along Kabul-Kandahar highway, our reporter said from the area. The highway was, shortly after the explosion, blocked off and no one has been allowed to get close enough to see.

KANDAHAR, Apr. 24 -

Abd-ur-Rasheed, an infamous personnel of National Directorate of Security, a local spy agency of the U.S-NATO forces, got shot by Mujahideen Friday on his way home, in Daman district of Kandahar city. the stated agent who was skilled in torturing civilians and Mujahideen ended up facing the consequence of his actions after a long chase by Mujahideen.  

The agent is said to be in critical condition at the moment. Separately, one of the employees of NDS  was killed in an attack by Mujahideen prior to this other day in Kandahar city.

Ten Afghan and coalition soldiers killed near Kabul city

The combined Afghan and coalition troops were confronted with an ambush attack from Mujahideen while they were on an attack mission against Mujahideen in Musahi District of Kabul province situated 3 kilometers to the north of the provincial capital yesterday night(April 23), Mujaideen officials said.

The report states more than 10 Afghan and U.S-NATO soldiers were killed and scores were severely hurt during the clash with Mujahideen of the Islamic Emigrate that took place in Abd-ur-Rauf Kala area of this district.

The report adds a local interpreter of the U.S-NATO forces has been among those killed in the fighting, where as no Mujahideen have been harmed during the encounter.
