At least 61 killed in Iraq bomb attacks

A wave of bombings targeting Shiites, a market in Baghdad and a neighborhood in Al-Anbar province killed at least 61 people and wounded nearly 112 on Friday, police said.

The strikes conjured memories of the bloodshed that once engulfed the capital daily.

Two car bombs targeted worshipers in Al-Sadr City in eastern Baghdad, killing at least 21 people and wounding 45.

At least eight people died and 13 were wounded when a car bomb and a roadside bomb detonated outside Muhsin Al-Hakim mosque in southeastern Baghdad.

In the northwestern Baghdad neighborhood of Hurriya, a car bomb explosion outside Hadi Al-Chalabi mosque killed five people and wounded 10.

A roadside bomb outside the Sadreen mosque in Al-Zafaraniya neighborhood in southeastern Baghdad killed two people and wounded seven.

One person was killed and six were wounded when a roadside bomb exploded in an outdoor market in the southern Baghdad district of Dora.

A car bomb exploded outside one of Muqtada al-Sadr's offices in Sadr City, also wounding five people. Another car bomb exploded outside a Shiite mosque in the Ameen neighborhood in southeastern Baghdad, wounding two people.

Six people were also killed and 10 were wounded in the western Anbar province town of Al-Khaldiya, when six roadside bombs exploded in a residential area where a police officer and a judge lived. Authorities imposed a curfew.

Today's bombings followed a string of blows against Al-Qaeda by Iraqi security forces in recent days.

The bombings in Baghdad came after earlier today a series of roadside bombs killed seven people in Al-Anbar province west of Baghdad.

9 killed, 10 wounded in blasts in Ramadi

At least nine people were killed and ten others were wounded in blasts near three houses in eastern Ramadi, a police source said.

“A number of bombs, planted by unknown gunmen near houses in central al-Khalidiya district, eastern Ramadi, including the house of Judge Fadel Mahmoud and two houses of civilians between Albu Flis region and al-Shuhadaa and al-Sada neighborhoods, killing nine persons, including an Iraqi soldier and injuring ten,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“Security forces cordoned off the region, where they found two bombs,” he added.

“The forces were attempting to defuse the bombs, but one of them went off, killing a soldier,” he said.

Ramadi, the capital of Anbar, is 110 km west of Baghdad.

3 blasts jolt Baghdad, leave casualties

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq:

Three blasts jolted separate areas of Baghdad, killing three and injuring 20, a police source said on Friday.

“A car crammed with explosives went off in Sadr City, eastern Baghdad, near al-Sadr office, injuring four people, while another bomb exploded near Shiite Muhsen al-Hakim mosque in al-Amin neighborhood in southern Baghdad, injuring two people,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The third explosion occurred by a car bomb near Shiite Abdulhadi mosque in al-Houriya neighborhood in northern Baghdad, killing three and injuring 14,” he added.
